Mumps - anyone had them as an adult?
After having spoken to my sister-in-law (whose a doc) at home and shown her my cheeks (on my face) she says my parotid glands are swollen and that will most likely be due to mumps. She said that unless the swelling gets worse I've no need to got to the GP and just to take painkillers and rest.....
Anyone else had them as an adult? I suspect I've picked them up from the kids I've been tutoring at Kip McGrath as a few have been off sick recently, just hope the swelling goes down soon as it's quite painful and my face is HUGE lol

Not personally, but I do know someone who had them as an adult and it wasn't a great experience. Do as you would for you children - stay in bed and get looked after! Were you vaccinated againt them (MMR)?

A teacher I work with in WA has just contracted mumps. She was a home-schooled farm girl who didn't receive immunisation. She's had a few days bed rest and is now on the mend. I'm wondering if the same curfuffle about the MMR jab went down here in Oz as it did in the UK. The school we work in his heavily subscribed with new Pommies arriving and I wondered how many of those children did not have the MMR and are now maybe carrying the germ.
PS. get well soon

I had them two days after the birth of oldest, was almost 25 them. Luckily she didn't get it. It was very very painful. I was given the MMR vaccine as a child, so not sure I could still get it

Thanks SB, the pain is bad but I'm getting used to it. No idea how I managed to get it either since I've had the MMR but hey ho, it just goes to show...

I was under the impression that immunity from the mumps component of the MMR wears off by adulthood, and that's why adults are now getting this 'childhood' disease. I can't remember how I know that though, so I'm not saying it's 100% correct.
Anybody know how long MMR immunity lasts? I know immunity from the actual disease lasts a lifetime, but that's definitely not the case with vaccine immunity.

I had it in highschool, it wasn't quite as bad for me as Tonsilitis but still not good, you just have to make sure you get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids, there's nothing else you can really do other than look after yourself until you get over it.
Feel better soon

Still very sore today, almost a bit worse, going to get some better pain relief today as paracetamol doesn't really seem to be touching it! Thanks for all the well wishes.

Just don't infect any men as it can cause them to become sterile.
eg, your husband.
(but really if you caused anyone to become sterile becuase you went out sick then you're a bit mean!)
Edit:
rare too but I think it can also make women sterile if it goes into your ovaries.

Hope you are feeling a little better today Jen! My friend has just returned to work after having mumps. She was off work for around 3 weeks and like you her face was swollen - well wishes Nicky
