Moving To Brisbane With Child With SEVERE disabilities
We are moving to Brisbane at the end of July and have started to worry about all things medical regarding our son.
He is 5 years old and has a very long list of medical problems including a tracheostomy.
We are taking as much as we can with us but really not sure on where or who or if we can get his dressings etc.
Also he is on a very long list of medicine and is tube fed with a special milk. Does any one know what office/dept/person we would be able to call to find out some of this information? Also the name of the main childrens hospital that could possibly contact?

Brisbane has a fantastic children's hospital, Lady Cilento Children's Hospital. Send them your questions via their website as I'm sure they'll have the information you need. It's also the place you'll go for all your son's outpatient clinics.

I'm going to assume you have visas. The only children's hospital in Brisbane is Lady Cilento. Are you moving from the uk? You really need to get your specialists to touch base with someone at lady cilento if possible. Waiting lists can be incredibly long to see some specialists and you don't want to be in that position with a tube fed child with a trache. I would look at ease of travel to lady cilento when deciding where to live as well.

You also need to check if the right medication is available and if it is all available on the PBS (Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme) through Medicare - otherwise you could be paying a small fortune and I doubt there is a Health Insurance company that would cover your son.

You may also be eligible (if you/your son are citizens or Permanent Residents - NOT if you are temporary residents) for support from Centrelink (Carers Payment/Allowance - similar to UK)
You may also be eligible for support from the Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme - https://www.health.qld.gov.au/mass
If you are on temporary visas (457, temporary spouse etc.) you will need to be prepared for the possibility that you will be paying for everything yourselves - reciprocal Medicare cover (like NHS for visitors) is only for Medically Necessary treatment and there seems to be a variety of interpretations for what that means.
