I reckon this could be the best decision you make, especially if you're in Perth. But get a move on though!!

Ha ha, I've had people calling me materialistic on this forum and scanning their previous posts show that they have swimming pools, plasmas and fancy golf club sets, 2 more things than I have

I wish people would be more honest.

What are the right reasons to move here? I'd love to know what newbies are thinking now. Anyone?

I can't speak for what all newbies are thinking but will try to articulate what I am thinking. Well firstly my husband is more enthusiastic than I am, he always spouts the better life stuff which irritates me a little because he hasn't really looked into what life will be like and just assumes it will be better.

At risk of sounding morbid, at this point I cannot see myself growing old anywhere but the UK however I am happy to try something different for X years and if I change my mind about growing old there then that is fine. I am excited about the adventure and seeing and living in a different part of the world. My husband and I could easily plan ten years of holidays within Austalia, NZ and Pacific. Travel is important to us and we don't have children to consider with the move.

Financially we will be worse off, because we both work in london and sydney salaries just don't seem to match up to london salaries, altho with poor fx rate they are looking about the same at the moment but not if a more typical historical fx rate was applied. However we will come over with about £300k cash and can still earn a very decent living so there is nothing to moan about, but just saying will not be better off financially.

As others have pointed out, the forum unfortunately doesn't give a balanced view. The moaners shout the loudest. Those that constantly dwell on negativity reduce the chances of positive things happening. It becomes a never ending spiral of doom and they take every opportunity to let people know about it.

Same thing if you read the letters page of the West Australian ... maybe about 20% of them are commending something and the rest are complaining.

You generally don't hear from people who get on with living life.

In general the advice seems to be 'stop listening' well will cheer the miserable windbags up no end

They will be caught in their own mealstrom of misery and have only theirselves to blame, you reap what you sow after all.

You people are crazy, i'm gonna blow this joint, feet don't fail me now.

In fact, we only needed to count on one salary and have a much better lifestyle than UK with more cash left over at the end of the day, it was a no brainer for us and a no brainer for thousands of UK migrants who came over at the same time or before. Word spread back to UK and everyone started to think about migrating to Aus.

Trouble is, the economic environment has changed here massively in the last 2 years. Today, that swap is impossible unless you are cashed up and earning a great wage. Cost of living has skyrocketed, no question, our income has risen at and above the inflation rate and it we're seeing the effects.

When things aren't going so rosy and people start to struggle financially, they start noticing all the negatives in Aus, like sun too hot, locals rude, price of beans is high and realise what they had back home wasn't so bad after all.

I've noticed a massive shift in affordability and cost of living in Perth over the last 2 years and I'm betting on the fact that the party is over here for the medium term. Poms can't afford to come here anymore, there's no 'fat' in the move unless you are blinded by beaches, parks and surf and on't give a shit about the financials.
I agree with you about the equation changing a lot for immigrants from the UK in the last 2 years....but I see that as more to do with what has happened in the UK than here..... I haven't noticed a massive difference in my life in the last 2 years, or frankly heard anyone I know commenting on it.

Prices steadily marching up with inflation but that has been happening forever...I few things rising more than inflation - got a smaller pay rise due to GFC but still got one. The last 2 years haven't stood out from other periods to be honest except maybe a bit cheaper due to lower house interest repayments.

Don't know, don't care.

I was responding to your claim that 'Poms can't afford to come here anymore', when in fact some of them can.

Nothing is absolute.

Most people - the world over - are generally pessimistic.

I don't think most people are. Just seems that way as ... well as stated before ... pessimists are more vocal

Agree. As someone who's been on here sadly since late 2004, I think I've noticed a lot of long term posters move on from the all about Aus & how fantastic it is to posts about life in general, entertainment posts and our next Curry posts instead. Theses due to nature of content swing from positive to negative depending on topic.

Over thirty years for us

The way I see it is we knew it was different here before we came, others think its the UK with sun.l

Aus is different in many many ways and its the difference we like otherwise we would have opted to stay in UK and had a holiday in the sun.

People tend to socialise at home a lot do not nip to the local for a pint. Therefor it takes a while to get friends and find a welcoming pond.

On the contrary I found their posts equally helpful (there were a lot of posters in those days - Pommie bastard, Sheila something, I forgot their names) when we were making the move...horses for courses I suppose. Some balance is needed and people need to know both the good and bad, then make their own decision.

It's a great forum, but I believe it would be ill advised to base a decision for a permanent move to Aus on it.

Remember, every single thread/post in here is entirely subjective in one form or another.

You could research the subject to death, come out on an advance reccie, even have friends or family already here to provide inputs, but.....at the end of it all, you will only truly find out if the move works for you or not by actually moving here and giving it a red hot go for at least 3 years.

It's the journey that's important, not the destination.

Good luck with your decision.

To be critical is a good thing, you shouldn't knock it. It's not about being negative or positive, it's about posting your views and allowing people to respond.

You can't expect everyone to agree, but by hearing a wide range of views you can be confident in your own view.
