I am preparing for it by only working for a few weeks now and then

Well considering that I am there for a few weeks every year and virtually all my family are better off than ever I think I will believe my own judgement.

As soon as my Son starts working, I'll be in serious countdown mode.

He may go for an apprenticeship yet... so could be sooner than we think.

Well if I were better off in the UK salary wise, like the conversation I had with isgraham a bunch of pages back, I wouldn't be here.

Perhaps this thread has run its course and an "Earning Potential Oz vs UK" would take the conversation to the next level.

It's cheaper for me as my earning potential is more. It's not for you as yours is less.

Perhaps you could explain why, by far, the majority who voted in this poll do not agree with you.

Let's see what spin you put on that
My answer: it's a poll on a forum! I would like to see, and have said, who has bothered to reply to such an open-ended poll. I won't argue with what the poll actually has concluded.

I think I have said already that most informed people know what is cheaper and what is not, and I would include you as informed.

I think there are loads of things that are more expensive in Australia than the UK, (and the US for that matter). It seems that both countries are expensive. It might even be that if you count everything that Australia is more expensive but show me one person that has ever demonstrated it - and let's see their personal circumstances.

What about the extra spin that the angry and disgruntled (and ignorant) put on anything that disagreed with them. The world is full of these people!

Noone has ever said it's cheap here. Not in recent years, anyhow.

You've had an entire life to accumulate wealth G, you are approaching retirment age. You might also have inherited wealth.

It's worth pointing out that things have changed too. Double incomes are often needed to buy a house - that was not always the case when perhaps you came of age. It's clear that housing is very expensive in Australia.

Lets assume they are UK based, like mine are, and at present provide me with little or no benefit living here. It's an exchange rate thing.

Petrol is cheaper. Parts are the same, servicing is the same (and I do a lot of it myself).
Insurance for us isnt cheaper in Australia mostly because we dont have to pay it twice. It is absolutely crazy that property insurance isnt compulsory.
FOR US, rego was $550 and road tax is £20.
There are MOT's in NSW and it is only £35 so no big deal.

Morning Chris. Sleep in did we? Bit like the pot calling the kettle black. You did call me an idiot yesterday. Not only condescending and a tad arrogant, but a little childish to boot

I was being realistic and probably insulting but not arrogant.
The more you play the Little Englander, indeed come over as one, the more I'll see you as one...and reply as an Englishman would...

I could really let rip, but as posters say, I'm quite reserved....doesn't pay to get too hot under the collar. Just a honest thought.

Oh for goodness sake you lot! Stop making judgements on people when you haven't walked in their shoes.

Discuss and, if necessary, attack the SUBJECT not the poster.

You have all posted positives and negatives about both countries at times so try a bit of live and let live.
