It doesn't matter what the stats say about what union membership is here in Oz. The CFMEU in WA is militant, no doubt. It's all the Glaswegians and Scousers who came here in the Thatcher times.
I saw Joe McDonald in a cafe close to my office a few weeks ago with 2 heavies that had mullets you'd have been proud of in the 80's, and they were drinking Latte's out of tall glasses. Not really something I would have expected from a working class union man, or have times changed?

OH works longer hours here for the same as he got in London, but the office fridge has beers and wine and nibbles and people can dress down on fridays. It is easier for him to get time off for family commitments/carer's leave, and he is known to the directors instead of being a faceless worker. He has a shorter commute and his office looks out over Sydney harbour instead of another concrete wall. He is happier here and less stressed for the greater part of the year.
The lifestyle is "defo" more laid back than the "push everyone else out of the way, I only care about myself" he found in London, and personally, I have found a great sense of "Mateship"- people actually go out of their way to help you if you are in trouble.
London= vicious circle
Sydney=virtuous circle

I see where you are coming from.
There's no doubt that people work here, and some harder than others, but for me life is slower over here and hits a sweet spot. There will be people complaining about the pace of life being too fast but then wish the service was faster.
And some people do the things that people consider laid-back, like BBQs, boating, surfing that sort of thing.

Re: Laid back Australia ??
I know mate But it's the most apt description I can find. Don't we all look for that in life?
I work in the city, and live on the edge of the country, but it's commutable. I don't live in Sydney (too fast), nor Brisbane (too slow) I moved to Melbourne. I have enough responsibility at work for a certain level of autonomy, but I have no responsibility (as such).
If I changed one of these I'd hate this joint too.
Infact just about my whole life to date can be expressed like this. I've done manual work, I've done skilled work. I like sport, I like the arts. I went to Uni, but I've also done alot of practical skill-based roles. It's all one big *** off state of mind.

Re: Laid back Australia ??
I thought 'sweet spot' was a phrase understood by all.
Particularly by a forum read by many people who follow the roundball game.
It highlights the fact that Australia can be difficult to get on in; too much, (or probably too little) makes for a bad experience. Let noone say I don't recognise the issues! I recognise them as much as the next person.

However, in my opinion, I recognise it has it's own issues that make it particularly worse than some other places, in some areas of life, and it's the way it works, not luck.
