Kingaroy, Queensland

Re: Kingaroy, Queensland
The locals were constantly interviewed to see if they agreed with Joh's latest moral outrage.
I'm sure things are different these days though...was a long time ago.

Yep that's what I posted earlier, Sir Joh was a dinosaur from a different time. It won't be long before those types are all extinct

My views are shared by many Melburnians and you guys know exactly why that is.
I dont want to taint a newcomers views to Aus any more than I have.
I do know that he and his Family will be far more welcome than most from down these parts.... In fact they could well get on well there, as many UK people do.

But I think it would be slightly unfair to the OP not to mention Cherbourg could be described as disadvantaged.
Yes there are some pretty areas up there too, the tourist website is great info if your going for a weekend but with respect I doubt if it contains much info about Cherbourg or the social problems in some areas round there
My partner actually lived up that region for a few years in his single days, and again recently he managed a project up there, I do know the area or wouldnt comment.
Edit: as i said some will embrace it, others particuarly a new arrival from UK may find it difficult if they dont know what they are up for, so the more info the better.

I don't think we've been through there since I realised where you are, actually, or I'd have made him stop
Now I only get up there when I'm visitng Cresta - maybe we should make a trip out to you sometime when I'm up there
Indeed, all jokes aside going to Cherbourg is a bit of an eye-opener. I got The Bloke to drive me up there once when I first got here, from sheer curiosity as he and his mum kept talking about it, and it was like another world, especially coming from a big town in the UK. Likewise living up that way, while it has some lovely scenery it is a very different world from living in Brisbane, or any of the coastal suburbs, and whle it may well suit some people I met there are many more who would find themselves out of their depth if they didn't have a fair idea what they were going into.
Cresta, I know you guys love it where you are, and its a wonderful spot, but I couldn't do it, even if I could drive. I'm sure you'd be the first to admit that living somewhere like that, or even in a town like Kingaroy, its very different from English rural life.

People have time for a chat, to pass the time of day with each other. We help each other out, I needed a lift with our Spa 6 blokes came to help & one brought a crane truck lol. Same with the pool table 5 blokes & 5 cartons of beer turned up. There's a good community spirit here, hence my willingness to join the RFB & help out @ the local club.
I accept it's not busy enough for many people. I enjoy the peace & quiet, the clean air, the wide openness this place offers. After living in a large town when I got married & hating it this is heaven to me.
If I feel the need to visit the city it's only 2 hrs away, so is the Barrier Reef in the opposite direction. Fishing is good just 20 mins down the road, 2 mins if you count the river.

Thanks for all the responses. Makes for some interesting reading. We are aware of Cherbourg as actually that is where my husband will be working as a social worker.
I don't doubt that its going to be very different from where we have lived in the UK or the USA but I guess thats exactly what we are counting on
