Wilf,

This statement is a very broad stroke. There are a few specialised computing skill sets that are in high demand here in Aus as well. If he has these he will be able to pick up a job very quickly. However, if his actual computing skills are not in any great demand then your general comment is accurate (and the comment about locals being preferred is unfortunately true all the time).

Fair enough Andy. The way I see it, I have just given what I have heard (I am a retired carpenter/joiner so not in your profession but one in which they could not afford to be too prejudiced!) and it has had the good result of prompting someone like you (who is better placed to comment) to make the situation clearer.

Sounds like we could agree on something for this bloke: poms are not chosen over Ozzies if there is a choice but if they have no choice, they will even take a pom.

All the best, Wilf

Wilf, thanks for being honest and thank you for a reality check. Clearly, we have given this a lot of thought and are not entering into it lightly, particularly with so much at stake.

I work for a big (if not the biggest) IT company on the planet and already have several job prospects. We, like everyone else, are feeling the pinch of economic slowdown and Oz is no different to anywhere else..........but I have a head-start, contacts, skills and tenacity and I'm hoping these will realise my dream for me to continue in IT. If not, hey.......I have no problem working behind a till in a 'leccy store. In fact, career is way down my list of priorities if it's on it at all. I'm a survivor, and I want this challenge in order to broaden my family horizons, not for my wallet or my so-called career.

If Oz is "very ordinary", then my thesaurus doesn't have words for the UK, so lets just call it "grey". I'm under no illusions - I just want a chance.

Hello and welcome on board, fasten your seatbelts for the rollercoaster ride ahead.

You will read lots of good and bad things about Oz. Everyone on here is different, different backgrounds/expectation etc so you can only absorb the info and do what you think is right for you!

We are a family of 4 who have crossed to the other side without too many scratches, here to assist if you need any info on bottle shops and current offers in the supermarkets

Good luck and enjoy the ride
Diane & Gang

Thanks for the welcome..............and no, thats a fish.....a Salmon actually !!

Hi Salmon
welcome to the group
i am relatively new here too, waiting for the TRA to positively assess my hubby who incidentally is a plasterer.
We also have the same 'under no illusions' as you, just a chance to spend more time together with our daughter, to have little or no mortgage and wake up to blue instead of grey skies most mornings!
best of luck, enjoy the wait, you like us are in for a long one!

There you go again Wilf always going to the silly extreme. PB was another one I was referring to and sometimes theres the odd other as well, not just you. I have no problem with negative views but its how they are delivered that winds me up. I reckon most on this forum would happily do without the abusive posts. Maybe we should have a poll? I think youre the cowardly one Wilf, hiding behind a computer screen dishing out insults or abuse that I bet you wouldnt say to someones face - (Iknow youll argue that). But its easy to rubbish others on a forum like this isnt it Wilf, and even more so if you have a negative view of life where you are. Why cant you treat people with a bit of respect ? Its not difficult. You can still be negative or disagree with everybody else. Thats OK. But iIt spoils this forum when anyone gets seriously insulting. It also spoils it to have to wade through alot of meaningless bickering to find something useful. Yes sometimes it can be entertaining but we dont all have the time you seem to have to tap away at our keyboards. I come to the forum to find useful information that will help me with my move to Australia and to get others thoughts and expeiences. I shouldnt be wasting my time bickering with you but I feel that unless people tick you off about the tone of your posts youll just carry on thinking that most poeple are enjoying it.

Hello Rich & family
We too are just starting out. My hubbie is a bricklayer and we too have two boys aged 2.5 years & 10 months. We have been considering the move for at least a year and after lots of research decided to to go for it, if we did'nt Im sure we would be always thinking 'what if?'
Have you got an agent? we finally decided to get one and I must admit I feel alot more confident now.
How does your family feel about you going?

Good Luck
Daihla

PS we live just down the road (cosham, portsmouth)

Sorry I didn't reply earlier Wilf but you are on my ignore list. No suprise there I suspect.

Normally I wouldn't bother to justify myslef to someone who can't read my posts (I did NOT comment on living in Oz, merely on the process of gaining the visa)

I have visisted Oz several times both east and west. Even my 5 year old has been 4 times. I have worked on projects in Oz and with Australians here. Both my wife and I have family living there who have clocked up over 40 years.

BTW Wilf are you honest enough to post where you are living. Quite why my current location makes any difference I'm not sure.

Hello all,

Thought we'd say hi and introduce ourselves. We are just starting out on our plan to move to Oz.

Looking at all the visa application posts on here, the waiting, the heartache, the stress, the disappointments, it looks a very daunting process.

However, we are determined and positive. I work in I.T., my wife and I have 2 kids, 4 and 2 y.o.

Where to start??? This is going to be a long process..........this looks like a cool place to hang out while we wait !!
Welcome to the forum. Where are you hoping to settle?
BTW I love this-<")))>< V.clever
Kind regards

Right, last time pal and I will be very nice to you.

I care not a jot if you do not like my posts. If you want to read them, read them, if not, don't. Put me on your ignore list but in any case, remove yourself to another place away from my physog.

I am not going to post in a style dictated by you or anyone else and there are already enough sherrifs on this forum without you playing Deputy Dawg too. I post in many tones of voice, depending on the topic and mood of the thread. Mind your own business, son, and let others mind their's. Do not think that I would be any different face to face; in your case, I would be less polite than this I can assure you if you thought you might "tick me off". I tell you what, I will return the tone of your post and tell you never to ever post on here again because I do not like you and if you ever do, I want you to do it in French. There have been votes to ban me before, hammy, and the majority wanted me off. However, a large minority did not, and I post for their sake, not tin pot editors and forum censors like your good self. Ban yourself and go and sit in a puddle.

In summary: Do me a favour and put me on ignore. That way I do not need to hear from you again and you do not need to read me again. Simple is it not?

I am bloody glad to hear it old son. I am not for all tastes (maybe very few) but I like variety and do not believe in bans but I see many do so that is a good thing for them to have at hand if they like the same soup every day.

Do me a favour will you? Can you explain to hamiltonnz how the ignore thing works because he seems to be hating my posts and yet is reading them anyway and he is making me feel guilty.

All the best, Wilf

Can't help with OZ stuff (we're in NZ) - but we used to live in Whiteley! Ahhh, how I miss those sculptures.....

All the best,

Love the banter between Wilf and associates! - It's hilarious and I log on just for the amusement of that as much as the interesting information on offer!!!

Welcome Salmon and family to the forum - am a newbie myself - I have found the posts ( Both positive and negative ) to be very helpful in our decision making process. My advice - which I have very quickly gleaned from this site is : " don't believe the hype " - but there is also a lot of true opinions which are well worth observing - and it's not all bad!

Am wondering like so many others why Wilf stays in Oz if he has such a low opinion of the country? Could it be that now he is retired he has decided to become a Victor meldrew?

Best wishes, Leigh.
