1) what health cover do i need to organise?

Depends on what cover you require. Have found Medicare to be very good compared to NHS in UK especially where children are concerned, they seem to be seen quickly and routine ops for ear grommets/tonsils etc seem to be done quickly. I think your 457 visa gives you access to Medicare for immediately necessary treatment, you would need to check this.
Having said that, for peace of mind insurance can be purchased either on a hospital only basis (this covers ambulance call out in states where they charge for this) and basic hospital cover covering general ops excluding things like pregnancy and some heart ops unless you go for the top level cover. If you want dentist, physio etc cover (what they often refer to as 'extras' then you can either buy a package including both. Depending on which state you are going to be living in depends on which insurer is the best as some are state specific and work hand in hand with specialists/providers in that state meaning you don't have to pay for treatment up front but just show them your insurance member card and it is billed directly to the insurer.

2) Will the insurance cover visits to Doctor or do i pay for them indivdidually?

Medicare covers a part and sometimes all of the doctors appointment charge depending on what the doctor charges for their appointments. Some 'bulk bill' to Medicare for the entire amount meaning you pay for nothing. Some don't meaning you pay for the appointment and then claim the money back from Medicare. Some people use this as a sort of emergency savings fund and collect money back when they need it! If the doctor charges more than the amount Medicare will pay then you will have to pay 'the gap' amount.I think you can buy insurance for this if you wanted to but normally the gap would only be around $20 to $30.

3) i have seen on some threads you pay for an ambulance to attend can someone advice as its totally diffrent on Scotland.

Most states do charge for ambulance call outs but this can be covered by insurance if required. I think it is free in Tasmania. Queensland used to collect a levy via electricity accounts for a community ambulance service so there maybe no need to buy ambulance cover there. Basic hospital cover insurance usually includes ambulance call out charge but check first depending on which state you are in.

4) Can i register for a local doctors on arrival if so do we pay ?

Yes you can register for a doctors on arrival but you can go to any doctors at any time, just walk in and arrange an appointent with your Medicare card. I know of some people who go to different doctors depending on ailments. Things like results of xrays, scans etc are given to you to keep so you can see any doctor with these.

4) Dentists is there insurance for this.

Yes, part of an 'extras' package on your medical insurance. Often covers 2 check up visits and clean and scale per your with an insurer approved dentist.
Be careful to check the level of treatment you may require such a teeth braces etc for the kids as some cover is an extra 'extra'!

5) what kind of cover do you suggest and any indication of monthly costs

Medibank is the national govt run insurer, they do cover for families but no idea of costs I'm afraid, try their website for a quote www.medibank.com.au.
There are other insurers which may work out better depending on which state you are in

Hi Mickpower75

Not sure if you mean for living or insurance?

Tapping is good from what I know, it's a newer area with newer houses and a fair few expats live in that area and the surrounding areas (Joondalup, Currambine, Carramar, Connolly). We live north of the river too and I prefer it to the south but am biased but others would disagree and say south of the river is better. Tapping is a fair way from the city by Perth standards but it depends where you are working. You'll have shopping (Joondalup), restaurants, golf courses nearby and easy short journey to several nice beaches (Burns Beach with nice cafe, Mullaloo and Hillarys) and kids entertainment waterpark/mini golf etc at Hillarys. Train and freeway runs from the city to that area so transport links are good.

For insurance in WA, HBF seem popular with my friends who have families and it is not difficult to change providers should your needs change.
Hope that help!!
When are you expecting to be here?

Mick, you need to get onto the Medirest plan when you arrive. this will only give you reciprocal health cover for docs appointments and what not. Law states though that you need private cover as well, so you should get on the Plan 190. it costs about $2000 per year for a family plan.

go to this website and check it out. you need your visa details to complete the application.

any news on the wee one yet?
