IAPT CBT Therapist
Hello,
My wife is a CBT therapist working in an IAPT team and she is hoping to practice in Australia. Is there anyone on here with a similar background that can share their experience?
She is from a Nursing background, Registered Nurse with a Masters in CAMH and a post-graduate diploma in CBT therapy from Reading University.
Worked as an acute nurse for 4 years before retraining as a health visitor/TB Nurse 5 years. Again retrained and worked in CAMHS for about 14 years before moving into IAPT.
Thanks for any feedback.

Re: IAPT CBT Therapist
She will be up against registered psychologists with CBT training and they are the ones that Medicare usually refer to especially for Mental Health Plans (they're subsidised). Psychologists have to be registered with AHPRA to be competitive and I dont know how she would stand on that, whether her nursing registration would give her the same capacity to practice. Psychotherapists and counsellors in general in Australia aren't highly valued because there are more psychologists to the square inch than anywhere else in the world and the regulations governing the registration of psychologist are pretty draconian. They dont much like non-psychs muscling in on their territory.

Thanks - what about private practice?

She could but she wouldn’t be registered for Medicare, just a counsellor. Anyone can put up their shingle as a counsellor but how much trade they get rather depends on establishing their creds somehow. People like to get some Medicare subsidy back if they go into private counselling. Counsellors are more likely to be employed by NGOs who probably can’t afford registered psychs but who offer a “counselling” service

Sorry for late reply. I am a mental health nurse who did CBT training for IAPT. It’s a no go here at the moment but there are plenty of mental health nurse jobs in community mental health teams where she could use her skills.
