Change of citizenship and Australian PR
Hi All...
This is my very first post and I apologize in advance if I am doing anything awkward here
I am a Canadian permanent resident currently holding Belgian passport. I have received the Australian PR last year and did the initial visa validation in last year June and planning to make the move to Australia sometime in 2018.
Meanwhile, I am planning to apply for Canadian citizenship and passport. My question is will it be a problem to have the citizenship and passport changed (i.e obtain a new citizenship) while I am on Australian PR and living in Canada? My Australian PR has been granted on my current passport (Belgian) and my concern is how the citizenship change would affect the Australian PR status. Previously I have submitted Form 929 after passport renewal, but it doesn't account for citizenship changes. Thanks for any answers... Lance

Belgian nationality law permits dual nationality so you won't lose your Belgian citizenship when you become a Canadian citizen.

Thanks for the reply. I don't worry about the Belgian citizenship status. I worry about the Australian PR status by obtaining Canadian passport.

You should enter Australia using your Belgian passport. If that is what you are asking. As your PR is tied to your passport. As long as you still have your Belgian passport, your Australian PR is not affected.

Even if his Belgian passport expires, his PR in Aus will not be affected.

Re: Change of citizenship and Australian PR
Thank you all for replying. So, even if I obtain the Canadian passport, my Australian PR is still tied to Belgian passport regardless of it's status (expired or not)? Anyway, I am glad to hear that it doesn't affect Australian PR

Your PR is tied to you as an individual. If you never left Australia then it wouldn't matter about having a passport but if you do travel then providing you have a valid passport link to your PR status it doesn't matter whether that passport is Belgian or Canadian. Within four years you will be eligible for Australian citizenship in any case so you can obtain an Australian passport to add to your collection.
