If i get within 5 points of 28 I can get a work visa for NZ to go there and find a job in 6 months. My question is do i have to apply separately for the work visa or will it be automatically given to me. How long would it take to get the work visa?

You get the 6 month work deferral visa by applying for PR, failing to reach the passmark but as you say being within 5 points, then NZIS will automatically ask you if you want the 6 month work visa. You have to say yes and pay a fee.

Thanx but how long does it take from application for residency, nz asking me if i want the work visa and getting it ?

It depends where you're applying. For NZIS London, recently they have been taking 8-10 weeks, so add on a week or 2 to get your work visa. It could be quicker - some posted that it took just 10 days to get PR decision. But NZIS's own guidance is for 4-6 months.

Try phoning the freephone number for the call centre in NZ, as the area offices have
different timeframe - Auckland = v.bad, but Hamilton, 100km away is about 3 months.
