You do realize that in Aus, Grammar schools are private schools. So is it private schools you are after? I think there may be a couple of selective high schools in Perth but the Perthites are still asleep and will be along soon and they will confirm. They will be closer to the UK "Grammar" school however competition to get into them is generally fierce.

My son goes to Guildford Grammar, which is in Midland (east). It's not a grammar school as you have in the UK but a non-selective private school. The nearer thing to a UK grammar school that I can think of is Perth Modern, which is a selective state school for bright children.

As the others have said, Perth Modern is the only totally selective entry state high school. Other state high schools have gifted & talented programmes, which like Perth Modern, are sometimes referred to as being run by the Education Dept. A list of schools & programmes can be found here:
http://www.det.wa.edu.au/curriculums...s-and-schools/
You don't have to live within the school's zone to attend, but the child has to show ability in the test. You apply for your kids to sit a test in Year 6, or they can sit it in Year 7, but not both. If you sit the test in Year 7, most of the gifted and talented places will have been offered to those who sat the test in Year 6, but not all those places get taken up, or they don't allocate them all. It is possible to gain entry at some other year levels, but you'd have to check with each school.
Some schools also offer school-run (rather than Ed Dept) programmes that also require the kids to sit a test. These programmes tend to offer academic and sports options, ie football at Woodvale, or academic, music and swimming at Churchlands, maths, IT and science at Como (SOR). Both levels of gifted and talented programmes are competitive to get into, but it does give the kids more opportunities and support. As these programmes are at state high schools, the fees are very cheap compared to any of the private schools.
