Re: Gas and electricity prices in australia?
I live in a 2 bedroom unit (just me though) and run air-conditioning when it's hot and reverse cycle heat when it's cold. I am at work 5 days per week - out of the house approx. 10 hours each work day. My cook top is gas - as is my hot water.
My quarterly electric bill has just come in (so includes most of the colder weather) and it was $210. The average over the last few years is $175. That's $60 per month.
Obviously if you have electric hot water and cooking and are home more regularly your usage would increase and costs rise!
My gas bill for hot water was $102 and gas bill for cooking $97. YMMV.
Hope that helps for a ballpark figure at least.

I pay 21.2 cents per KwH plus GST less 12 pct pay on time discount.... there is no other way to measure it.
Personally I used 37 kwh per day over the course of the last bill.....That's in an all electric household though.... with two large (ish) 5.5 kwh Mitsubishi inverter reverse cycle air cons heating the whole house, probably running at least 12 hours a day over the last quarter.... 4 large screen TV's (2 x 55 inches and 2 times 42 inches) Two Freezers (I like to buy and store cheap frozen goods) one 480 litre fridge. I have two nocturnal adult children... 21 and 32 living at home at present and a 18yo boy. 5 electric blankets... a 8.5kg washing machine that gets used at least twice a day.... oh and a Microwave and a electric double oven induction cooktop and a bosch dishwasher that gets used at least 1.5 times a day on average.... probably got two PC's and 2 laptops running 24/7 as well and an assortment of TV peripherals (Foxtel/Fetch/WDHDlive etc etc and two surround sound systems). This is in a 4 bedroom, modernised and fairly well insulated Melbourne Victorian weatherboard house.
I've paid 812 dollars for the last 91 days. Which I reckon is pretty cheap for a 37kwh per day household. ''The only gas I have is on our hot water and is run by an instant hot water system (bosch 6 star 26L) and that comes in at about 100 bucks every two months...my son has a bath every day... and we all take long showers.

Why would you be living in a 1 or 2 bedroom house in Australia if you're moving to New Zealand as a plumber? That's one hell of a daily commute.

Overall I think air con is the big issue in terms of bills, though of course if you need heating in Australia then that is a factor as well.
As for gas, does anyone have this just for cooking (not hot water as well)? What are the bills like because over in Singapore the gas part of my bill has always been <$10.

Fair enough. Just a bit of an odd question to start with when you presumably don't have a visa yet? Have you established whether you qualify for one?
