Default Few days in Melbourne - which area to stay and what to do?

I've not spent any time in Melbourne for about 15 years but we are probably going to be there for a few days next week. Where would be a good area to stay and what should we do for say three days of touristy stuff?

Have a look in the search box. lots of good threads on Melbourne see and do. There was a great thread where I suggested the State Library. It had loads of good suggestions in it.

If you get stuck go to the tourist centre in the Bourke street mall, its bright red you cant miss it. Very helpful volunteers or the visit melb website shows whats on each week.

Free trams round the city centre, hop on hop off will take you to most things too. Miki card will get you anywhere for about 7bucks a day unlimited trips too.

Hi, Travelodge Southbank Melbourne is a good place to stay and cheap too. Well located near a lot of the good places to see.

Thanks but in the end we booked the Cosmopolitan in St Kilda for tomorrow night and the Windsor from Wednesday to Friday. I'm surprised how inexpensive Melbourne hotels are. Much cheaper than Sydney.

Any good suggestions for nearby eateries?
