I think the slight drop in the unemployment figures you're referring to is for August - we're almost half way through September now, so they are showing the past. What is officially happening now, we won't know until next month.

Anyone who loses their job and their Oh earns minimum wage, can't claim unemployment so not included in the unemployment figs in Aus. Unemployment figs in Aus are grossly understated you only have to see in the real world how many are looking for work and can't find jobs and can't claim unemployment benefit.

As for Aus growing you need to take your glasses off mate

It is a really bad time to be considering moving to Australia at the moment, there is absolutely no doubt that unemployment will rise, possibly dramatically, in the months/years to come. The economy is being almost totally supported by mining and employment in that sector is dropping across the board. Personally I would sit tight and see how it pans out.

The economy is not being "almost totally supported" by mining, Chris. The China slowdown will cause a contraction in mining which will mainly be felt in WA. The service sector is nearly 70% of the economy, and mining much, much less. I do believe unemployment will rise from it's current 5.1%, but it has a long way to go to exceed UK unemployment.

No one honestly believes the 5.1% figure surely ?? I didnt say mining was the largest sector of the economy, I said mining is almost totally supporting the economy.

Sorry you are probably right, the 3.7% growth figures this year must be wrong.

I don't think anyone does, just like no one believes the UK unemployment figures, you would think though, that the UK government would fiddle the figures down as low as the Australian figures, wouldn't you?

Many say the true Australian figure is double the official figure. Yes as you say it is surprising the UK Government doesnt do the exact same thing to make the situation that bit better.

It's gonna make interesting reading when the new figures come out.

Last year - that's the figure for the 2011-12 financial year which ended 30 June.

Since the new financial year began in July, China is showing more signs of slowing down, mining projects have been shelved and some mining companies are, or will be soon, shedding jobs, and the Qld government are in the process of making a whole load of public service cuts (along with Victoria, and I think it might be happening in NSW too).

You either believe 5% for Australia and 8% for the UK, or you believe neither.
