Wrong. Read my post. She will not lose two grand. From the 5th April 2015 for savings income ONLY SOURCE OF INCOME GLOBALLY. Then the threshold has been lifted to 15000 pounds sterling. So recieving ten grand interest sterling. So eighteen grand interrst dollars is tax free post 5th of April 2015. Thats if it is made law next year it could be years away.

The double taxation agreement does not work like that. It is much more detailed, it actually considers different types of income and then the rule as to where tax is paid is specified for each different type of income. Sometimes it is where you are resident and sometimes it is where the income is sourced.

I am simply gong by my own experiences.....I am not claiming to be an expert

We get all of our income from the UK and pay all our tax in Australia.

You are up to the 5th April 2015 entitled to claim your personal tax free alliwance in the UK. While living here in Oz. Depending if your global income is above roughly $20450 will be a factor as to whether you pay any tax here in Oz.

No we can not.....we are Autralian tax payers therefore have to pay tax on all our worldwide income to the ATO.

We can not get a UK tax allowance if we are not UK tax payers

If your source of income is derived from the UK you can. Google it. Obviously there must be tax paid in the UK to claim the allowance in the first place lol.

There is no point.....I still have to pay tax on all my income in Australia anyway.....I have opted out of the UK tax system.

You can not claim the UK allowance and then not declare that part of your income.

See post 20. I made the point that covers what you say.But you can claim it. Obviously your income derived from the UK is above $20450 per annum. Which i stated un post 20.If your income was below this figure there would be a point in claiming your allowance.

What would be the point?

You would still have to pay tax in Australia on your worldwide income.

How can you claim an allowance if you do not pay any tax in the UK?

You are correct. Pension income is treated differently from, say, rental income (which is what this change is effectively about.)

Indeed....I am not sure how it will affect those with rental income.

For my wife and I it will make no difference as we are Australian residents and taxpayers and our pensions are paid gross into Australian bank accounts.

OK, can someone help me understand this. Is income from UK rental properties when the owners are permanent residents and tax resident in Australia exempt from Australian tax somehow at the moment?

No, absolutely not. But for rental income the UK taxman gets first bite of the cherry.

Ah right yes now I understand what is meant - tax is deducted at source on rental income I think unless you can produce some kind of exemption document.

I thought I read that this will change as the UK is going to do the same as Australia does (and many other western countries do) and now tax income that comes from within the country?

It seems the UK will now get your tax instead of Australia gaining by collecting tax from UK income. And that every penny will be taxed because you can't have a UK tax allowance as you don't reside in the UK?
