There's barely any difference in the unemployment rates between NSW, VIC and QLD...and all of em are higher than WA.

Well they unemployment rates aren't exactly bad in any of those states...particularly WA...whether they tell the full story or not is another matter. I don't feel its that bad here.

It's bullshit statistics. I know quite a few people who are looking for work who have savings or unable to claim benefits and are not counted in the stats. What we read about and reality is a different story

its no secret that in the resources trade.. in all occupations.. its gone very quiet..
no new projects.. lots of the big mega projects are winding up - Dredging finished in Gladstone, first gas for one of the plants on Curtis (QGC) early next year..

i am not saying "its all over" but its a lean time.. and if your out of work.. then i hope the warchest if full as you might be eating out of it for the next 6 months

Does it mean we're moving from Development stage to Production stage?

Thats exactly the thing with unemployment stats, some would have us believe there are no jobs here which obviously isnt the case and the rate here isnt high. I dont know anyone unemployed here or Australia. Now Spain that is a different matter

Under employment is a big issue. Then those who never show up on the figures the middle class unemployed.

I suspect the issue is far greater than stated. On top of that lobbyists are pushing it would appear to do away with the need for business to seek out on shore personal before looking off shore for 457's.

No one should stop genuine 457 requirements if the skills are not available in Aus however employers should demonstrate the genuine requirement. Far too many 457's are brought in without finding those same skills internally.

We shouldn't mix up underemployment with unemployment though - two separate issues.

Bringing people in on a 457 isn't a cheap option - they pay for flights, shipping container, medical insurance, accommodation for a couple of weeks on arrival, relocation agent fees etc.

But then maybe they pay 457 visa holders less than what they would an Aussie so then the costs of bringing someone out over 4 years gets aborbed or mabye there is a tax deduction someone in the equation???
