Canberra might be better (seriously!) the NSW ski fields are around 2 hours away but there is a local winter slope at Corin Forest which is around 45 minutes from the centre of town. Nowhere is going to be much use in the summer though you will often see skiers using their roller skis on paths around the lake when the snow isn't there.

Possible, depends on the ROI. Do other dry ski slopes make money?

I have to admit, as much as I love skiing, broken shoulders and knees through it, and probably spent enough money to buy 2 Melbourne houses on it, I have never had the desire to entertain one of those dry ski slopes. They look horrible. What do you actually do on them? Practice your turns?

I wasn't the one banging on about Japan and the scene outside Australia. I said there are people who make the use of their local knowledge to make the best use of their own backyard despite limitations. A very healthy attitude which impresses me. They do go further afield but do well locally. I only talk about the elite nature because of their backgrounds and common skillsets. British Expats have always worshipped the ordinary and deride people who get out and do things in the main. Always been a parodox.

Yes BE'er in general suffer from tall poppy syndrone but just because you are into the outdoors doesn't make you elite. Its a hobby, a sport.

Perhaps the "elite" bit should be toned down.

Agree on tall poppy syndrome it is as much a Be problem as an alleged Australian one. You are correct in general. The elite reference reflects the background of the punters involved and their way in to these groups and the specialisations involved and the training, too. Your average punter doesn't just turn up : there is a roadmap of past experiences. I can't necessarily list it all here. There are people who complain about Australia and their lives yet have never done anything. The story of many a migrant.

Aussie downhill is very limited.
But people are using local knowledge to make the best of it because that is the sort of people they are: very healthy attitude and I wish the av expat had the same ideas.

Most schools have teams competing so if your son is good enough he might make the team.

The people who do a 5 or 6 hour plus round trip to the Victorian ski fields are getting out and doing things.

The emu 4th right nips over to Sapporo however.

Completely disagree and find the comment somewhat ironic but no matter.

Both the children currently ski for their school team and they both competitively race for their ski club, so hopefully they could transfer quite easily. Definitely something they both want to continue with. Thanks

I wasn't sure of the most schools have a ski team claim? Certainly it is only likely to be a private/fee paying school in Melbourne which has skiing but a government school close the snowfields might have one. Schools do have ski trips organised of course. It's not on the list of school sports for APS (like in the UK they are called public schools but that's another story). Obviously they'd have to go up to the snowfields to compete against each other as they won't have ski slopes down in Melbourne at the schools!

I believe stuck in Auckland was talking about Auckland/NZ schools. Not Melbourne/Australian schools.
