Just read first 20 pages on the train to work. So far so good. Covered the oddities so far - Harold Holt going missing, Bluebottles not hurting, a nuclear explosion in the outback that everyone ignored. Quite amusing so far, so I'll stick with it.

I though it was a good read I got through it on the flight to and from Spain.
Now looking into a few of his other books.
Might pass the time on the big flight to Oz.

I really expect to find that Down Under gives a more accurate account of Australia and Australian life than other books aimed at would-be immigrants. Of course, I'm going to have to wait to get there before I know for certain
:lecture: Very highly recommended - so go buy it now!

Right, finished it now.
Pretty good, especially the unusual stories.
Good on Bill Bryson for distinguishing between Aussie down-to-earthness and good old fasioned arseholes.
He did my head in a bit when he kept going on about how dangerous a place it is and came across as a bit of a wimp.
I'd recommend it though if you wanna a laugh.

I think you will find that most of the stuff on Dangerous creatures is 'Tongue in Cheek' and for effect.
He used to live in New England and his book: 'A walk in the woods' is about the Appalachian trail.
The Bears in that area can be pretty scary as well. :scared:

Right - I'll finally read it then. It's been in a draw since I purchased it twelve months ago (around the time our visa apllication was sent off).

I had an aussie mate visting last week and he borrowed my copy. He said it was one of the funniest books he had ever read and proceeded to sit by the pool and laugh his head off whilst reading it - much to the amazement of the german tourists
