crime in melbourne

Re: crime in melbourne
It's a reasonable point, and it is annoying how sanctimonious some other nations become as they ignore their own country. A few Indians being bashed/robbed is of course terribly minor in comparison to a country with 1 billion people, many of which are still subject to caste systems, tribal violence, inter-religious violence etc etc. I guess it only affects rich Indians that can afford to send their kids overseas.
In any case the dislike of them I think is much more than just taking jobs. (I think many of the perpetrators of violence are not the sort that would be keen on working anyway)
People are just fed up of smelly taxi drivers who try to rip you off, or are aggressive and rude. Most Melbournites seem to have a bad taxi-driver story. Then there are the insufferable call-centres, that drive you to drink as you try to understand them, or them to understand you and even if that is the case actually trying to get a resolution. I was once told to "Go to hell" purely because I said I didn't want a phone contract from an unsolicited call. When they come into workplaces they are often rude, cagey about answers or downright liars, and more than 2 of them and they often revert back to their own language when they don't want you to hear. Then the visa abuse where many are faking course attendance or using hairdressing or cookery course purely to gain residence. And having a few Polynesian friends who work doors on various Melbourne venues by all accounts their respect for women is also something that leaves room for improvement as well.

I would like to close off my comments on this thread by injecting some facts into the thread:
The following is a list of violent incidents directed at foreign people and interests in Australia. This is from a respected government source. What this list proves is that the new immmigrant to Australia has much more to fear from their own countrymen or their own natural enemies, than they do from some scruffy, drunk Aussie bogan on a train:
The sad problem is that the pepetrators in most of these incidents are not "Australians". They are the rotten festering baggage that has followed the the immigrants from their old home to their new home. Sadly, people have a tendency to bring both the good and the bad with them to their new home.

Re: crime in melbourne
Yes if you see the film Romper Stomper set in Melbourne the same place where the Indians are now being atacked, whenever a Vietnamese was attracked by racists a van load of 20 of his cousins armed with machettes would always quickly show up for revenge, maybe the racists are too affraid to pick on Vietnamese so they target other groups like the indians. AS someone said Vietnamese often travel in gangs and armed while Indians are often alone and unarmed which makes them an easier target for cowardly racists who know they can't fight back.

Re: crime in melbourne
I would love Coburg to become a center for Indians. I'd like to see the Malls become a bit like Brick Lane, with the associated bars etc. The Indian consulate is in Coburg and there are a lot of Indians around here. I dont think there is too much of a problem in this area for them.
Melburnians as a whole are used to big waves of Migrants and students, there are always incidents along the way. I really thought there was going to be major trouble with the Somalians, however that seems to have settled down now. Before them the Greeks and the Italians copped quite a bit of flack, but they adjusted quite well and have settled. It does seem that the Indians are copping it far worse than most groups though. Why do their women, who could well be a major asset in all of this assimilating, seem so quiet ?

The Banglas in Brick Lane had to survive some really heavy racism back in the 70s plus most had little education so were somewhat easier targets than Melbournes present educated Indian student population i would suggest.
Fact is it has already got to diplomatic levels and is very embarrassing for Australia a nation that constantly attempts to sell itself of as perhaps the worlds most successful multi racial nations.
Canada has seen an opportunity it appears to snatch some potential students, if the attacks leading to fear continue, to encourage them away from Australia and towards Canada.
Somalis were never so big in number to have such an impact here but in London some negatives are put around with that group with regards to gangs, rightly or wrongly.
Would suggest the arrival of Indo Chinese refugees in quite big numbers in the late 70s onwards dissipated to a large degree the strong bias against South Europeans prevalent at the time.

May be this will wake the impotent Victorian police which is good for nothing. Instead of nabbing and prosecuting the racists, they are blaming back on Indians about travelling alone.

They have never blamed Indians - merely made sensible suggestions that have been misreported and taken out of context.

Besides, I find your attitude about this issue to be just as bad as the racists that you are complaining about. Very hypocritical.

Re: crime in melbourne
Now in that train video. The faces of all culprits who live in Weribee are quite clear, if the police wants the can arrest all of them within 2 days (from face matching database). I know they have arrested some attackers but only after Indian media presurrized, what a shame, height of discrimination, aussie police needs a trigger to work when it comes to Indians.
Now they will leave those proud Australian sons after warning..The whole world has seen their sadism they way they have beaten the poor guy Saurav.. Such people such be sentenced to at least 5 or 10 years..so that others should know what's the fate of racist is.
Aussie Govt has be prove by example that "Yes, we can sentence white australians also, if they are involved in crime. Law is equal for everybody". So far it is incapable of doing that and its ugly face is getting unveiled in front of the whole world.

I have checked out a few Indian papers and it seems that Indians like to beat people up themselves, usually women ....

Random attacks on young women
Deepika Arwind
BANGALORE: The past week has been marked by at least three reported assaults on young women in Bangalore’s streets. In what appears to be a backlash of the condemnation and campaign against the Mangalore pub attacks, three women were picked out for their “western clothing”, by groups of two to four men.
The first reported attack on February 17 in Indiranagar was on a young woman driving her car. Two men on a motorcycle chased her and made ugly comments until she decided to run into a familiar apartment building for help. But before she could do that, she was cornered against her car. She had a fight with one of the men. The woman finally managed to seek refuge inside the building, but was too shaken to note the number of the motorcycle.
The second assault took place on Tuesday morning in Ulsoor, when a young woman was accosted by four men in a high-end car. They not only abused her in Kannada for wearing “western clothing”, but also tugged at her clothes and looked through her bag. They hit her on the ear and scratched her neck. She was rescued by Army men. On Tuesday at 9 p.m., a young film-maker walking down a road past Mount Carmel College, was beaten up by four men. She was told she deserved it for wearing jeans. The first and third victims of the attack have registered complaints.

On the afternoon of January 24, a group of young women in Mangalore in the southern state of Karnataka were attacked by Hindu vigilantes in a pub (bar). Dozens of activists from the little-known Sri Rama Sene (Lord Ram's Army) assaulted the women (and men, according to some reports) in order to protect “traditional Indian values”. The attack, which was filmed and broadcast on national television, has outraged many, and the activists have been described as “saffron hooligans” by one government minister – while other politicians have tried to make political capital out of the incident.

But it is plainly not white Australians in many of these cases - they didn't look very white on that Werribee train. But I agree, harsher sentences are needed.

So are you saying that the Police should lock up all the Islanders and Africans to stop them bashing up Indians? We live in a multi-cultural society and one of the risks of that is that there will be inter-ethnic feuding.
