Re: crime in melbourne
I live in Brunswick, north Melbourne city fringe. A guy was killed here this week, at the end of my street. He tried to stop some guys beating up a lone defender outside a club in the early hours. The mob cleared off, came back and followed him to a late night store. Stabbed him. Fled to Thailand.
According to local radio this happened before. Two years ago. Public outcry.
Having arrived here from Manchester (could have been Nottingham, Birmingham, Londonham, Bristolham) I feel much safer here walking the streets at night than I would at home.
Murder / death doesn't make the news at home. Unless there is some media angle to make it interesting... "olympic champion's nephew is killed" or "MP's nanny in fatal car crash".
I can honestly say that I have seen less that 10% of the grief on the streets than I could easily witness in Manchester and surrounding 'mining towns'. There are idiots everywhere of course, and judging by your posts you must be spending considerable time on King Street (not the one in Manc)?

Re: crime in melbourne
lol every day, i just looked at the statistics there were 84 murders in all of Ireland(exluding Northern Ireland) in 2007. Good try though. with 4 million people in the country that is hardly bad. Here in Toronto, Canada we have 80+ a year consistantly in a city of 2.5 million and the numbers are hardly bad.
in dublin, ireland we have a population of around 2million. Every day someone gets murdered, usually drug related. Its still a fairly safe place. So i'd imagine with melbourne being the size it is and with such a large population its a very safe place compared to dublin

Oh my goodness hahah. If your considering fist fights a Warezone you are highly mistaken. Tell anybody in any country who is actually involved in a war (Iraq, Afghan) that. People in North America here WISH people still just fist fought and left it at that.

I just thought I would also remind everyone to have somewhat of a wordly perspective on this. Im just putting in my two cents from a different part of the world but I have travelled months in Australia and come on, it is far from bad.
Trouble wont be had by most of the general population unless your looking for it.
Also to put things in perspective Detroit had 410 murders the other year in a city of 1,000,000. You cannot safely drive downtown or a lot of the neighbourhoods off of the freeway. People are allowed to run stop signs if need be, etc...
Now compare Melbourne to that and give yourself a shake

King St. (Melb) has always been a hotspot. I usually keep away from the place as it is mostly strip joints and I prefer the bar scene. I have seen fights at Flinders St. station, Queen St, Flinder St., the casino, Fitzroy, Carlton, Brunswick, Sth Melb, St. Kilda, Prahran, Sth Yarra. So not just the CBD.
There is very much a machismo thing going on with the guys over here.

First of all, I wasn't talking about murders in Melbourne, I was talking about street violence ie fights, assaults. Obviously there are more murders in the US. In London, someone get shot or stabbed every day. There is no comparision.

Indians do seem to be a target at present. I'm not exactly sure why this is. I've said before on these boards, that they are being targeted in a way I've not seen in my 30 years in Aus.
I've heard 2nd hand from Aussie perpetrators of this, that it's almost fashionable to belt an Indian.
Some reasons could be that Indians are out and about at later hours than some other recent migrants and are more likely to encounter idiots. One thing that has me scratching my head, why didnt this kind of thing happen to our recent influx of Vietnamese and Chinese. ?
It could be that the Indians made the situation more public by calling the race card early, making the situation more known, thus attracting louts attention, which has compounded the problem.
An analogy I could use, would be in the early days of Football hooliganism in the UK, the TV cameras would show the trouble, which aided it's spread rapidly around the country.
It does need sorting, it's sad, and I really wish it wasnt happening. I've got no idea what the answer is.
Maybe the Indians should check in somehow with the Chinese and Vietnamese and see how they went about assimilating into Australian society.

Reason is self defence. Vietmanese and Chinese learn self defence and martial arts in their school program. Vietnamese more prone into handling fight situations, because they have seen the worse during American reign. Sadly not Indians who never learn self defence probably thinking that everybody will respect you because you respect everybody.
