Default Costs when re-registering a Car interstate

Happy easter everybody

W're finally moving to Oz later in the year after validating our visas last year, and we're just trying to plan what to do when we get there. We want to settle in Perth, but wouldn't mind landing in Sydney and travelling the East coast and then going across to Perth via Alice Springs. So, we're thinking about buying a car in Sydney and then when we get to Perth, re-registering it as a WA car. Does anyone have any experience of doing this, and does anyone know how much (approximately) it costs? If it's too much hassle or expense, we might as well just hire a car for the east coast and then fly over to Perth....
