I suggest it was a private specialist if they charged you. My daughter recently saw a a Pediatrician referred by GP. Similar costs to yours. We could have been referred to PMH where it would have been free but the waiting list was prohibitive.

You also have to consider the 'lost income' component of specialist visits:

When pregnant my wifes obstetrician would attent to his appointments within 30 minutes of the scheduled time pretty much always....

Public pre-natal appointments however, usually require a half day waiting in the clinic before you're seen.

(Most other private specialists we've seen have been pretty timely too -and I've heard horror stories of people waiting for public appoinments where scheduling is definately an unpracticed 'dark art'.)

If the private appointment costs you $80 out of pocket - you really need to factor in the cost of time saved by not having to hang around.

I have had a host of MRIs for my medical condition and have never paid here at the hospital. I go to see my neuro and she bulk bills (lovely smart offices too) and have not ever seen patients pay on their way out. I do pay to see my GP however LOL.

Does this mean if you go to a non bulk billed dr and they want to send you for tests, do they refer you to someone or can you ask them to refer you to say the public hospital? For example if I went to the dr and they told me I needed xray, blood test etc, how do I know what this is going to cost me? Would I go for the tests and then end up with a large bill?

Are you sure that wasn't a private specialist? Not sure if you already know this but you have to specifically ask your GP to see a public specialist at a public hospital otherwise they will generally refer you to a private specialist. You still get some public money back when seeing a private specialist.

X-rays and Blood tests are nearly all available bulk billed. Just ask the doctor to do a referral to a bulk billing one, or just use any referral at a bulk billing one.

Can anyone give me typical costs I can expect to have at a dentist for things like a check-up, clean & polish, filling etc? Also is it cheaper for kids?

I had a filling fall out recently and for a basic (i.e. no cleaning) appointment & new filling it cost me over NZ$400 here. The same would have cost me £45.60 on the NHS.

I can't tell you the costs as I can't afford to visit a dentist, but I would sit down before you read the responses from most people on here

So here I am wondering how much more expensive it can be than NZ? I supposed we'd at least be able to earn more money in Oz so it wouldn't hurt *quite* so much

Check up and clean is about $80 for me I think. If you have private health insurance which most Australians do you seem to get two visits a year to the dentist paid for as part of that.

Mrs Wol's last cleaning was $191: my own $237 (inc. XRay).
