Cost of a second checked bag with airline is astronomical!
Unless I’m missing something airlines now charge a fortune to check a second bag. I plan on returning to the UK with two cases of about 20kg each
Qantas – 23kg single bag allowance and then any additional allowance can be purchased at $210 per 5 kg. An additional bag at 20 kg is then over $800! Am I being stupid here and missing something very obvious? http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airl...gage/global/en
Ethiad – 30kg allowance over many bags, after this its $81/kg, again an $800 charge in my case for an extra 10kg.
Emirates – 30kg but I am not sure if this is one bag or can be split into separate bags. If it is multiply bags I require an additional 10 kg at $410, but if it’s a single bag I require an addition 20kg at $840.
On another note I found this on Emirates website – “Pets are not permitted in the cabin, with the exception of falcons between Dubai and certain destinations in Pakistan”. Love the idea of falcons flying around the cabin.
BA – An extra checked bag is £55 for 23 kg WINNER

You'll have to fly from Sydney I think though. While BA will sell you a ticket from e.g. BNE to the UK I don't think the extra checked bag for £55 will be accepted on a partner airline out of BNE.
Virgin Aus would transport your extra bag cheaply to SYD however.

BTW .... have BA got their A380's yet? I saw it parked at Toulouse airport a few months back, all painted up ready to roll.

put everything in a couple of boxes and send it back with someone lie excessbagage might be cheaper

Yep, get someone like Excessbaggage or one of the baggage courier companies to send it. We did that coming from the UK, sent 2 suitcases on ahead. There's also people like Pack and Send which would be far cheaper than airline excess baggage. It's usually charged at 1% of the 1st class fare per kilo, so soon adds up!

if true then a short hop between Brisbane to sydney shouldn't matter, but I cant confirm until I speak with them.
Thanks for your feedback folks, pprobablygoing to fly BA as my employer is paying return airfares, but not relocation costs for personal possessions I dont think I could transport the case for less than 55 GBP any other way.

Do you still get much better allowances by flying via US? It used to be 2 checked bags each.

I think even the North American routes have gone the one bag per passenger policy as well. I know when we emigrated (2009), it was still 2 bags each, but the trip over last year was one 23kg bag allowed and an extra one was $90 (if I recall correctly) with Air NZ.
I just checked and even that's gone up. I paid $90 at the counter last year for the second suitcase, but now it's $90 if you prepay in advance (yes, you have to plan to overshop) and $200 at the counter if you just show up with an additional suitcase.

They have also got a few B787s - a friend of ours is training to fly them
