Construction industry jobs, Bris vs Syd vs Mel?
Hello, we are in the early stages of the immigration process and interested in the usual 3 cities, but cannot find much information online about which city has the biggest construction industry, i.e most new builds projects.
I have looked at Brisbane (our preferred destination) but, despite all the the timber houses, there doesn't seem to be many construction/ carpentry jobs, despite it, apparently, having a bit of a population boom?
Does anyone have experience of working in the trades in any of these cities?
Gracias

Hi there,
Perth was the place to be for this type of work a few years ago, but its cooled off apparently according to our builder friend who lives that way.
For a safe bet I'd consider Sydney, the logic I use is, more people, more houses, more work.
But I could be wrong .
Good luck.

Just to add Brisbane was our first choice too but we have had to change direction and go where the work is. Which in our case is Melbourne at the moment.

So, in your case, I reckon go to the city that appeals the most.

A friend of mine is a chippy and came to live in Brisbane from the UK about 6 years ago. for the first year or so he struggled to get any carpentry work, he did a spot of taxi driving and also worked for a courier company to get him started.
Once he got his first job in the construction industry he was fine and despite being laid off a few times he has managed to keep working even through a downturn in house building. He also tells me he gets lots and lots of offers of 'private work' from various people, and friends of people he knows. His only complaint is the heat especially during the hot humid months.
He tells me there's a fair bit of construction work starting on the Gold Coast which is less than an hours drive from Brisbane.

I'm always at a loss to understand why people, based in the UK, have a preference for living in Brisbane. As well publicized, I would live in any other Australian city except Adelaide first. Brisbane gets a lot of negative press. There was even a thread thst asked. 'Hey Brisbane. What's good about Brisbane?' - no one responded.
Can someone enlightened me as to why people who have never lived in Oz want to go and live in Brisbane?

Now though, I wouldn't mind it. It has a nice winter, they protect their leisure time, (well they do in my company compared to Sydney office ) and I think it provides good access to a range of interesting places to visit, I like Queensland.

I just don't know why it would be on the radar, it is not famous for anything and most wouldn't know a lot about Brisbane. I am not suggesting it as a scientific fact that it would not be on the radar though!
