There you go, conflicting info from different people. Best thing is to think of it as an investment. At your age, give it a shot - nothing to lose other than money but in 10 years time you won't remember that.

Inclined to agree with above. Just come for the adventure without mind to career and money and see what happens. At worst you could join the back packer circuit and trip around the country doing whatever but having a ball.
See what happens without the expectations.

I could come and see except aus visa is very expensive and so are plane tickets. More importantly I'm married now so I can't think like a back packer, hence asking the question here. I wanted to ask those who know the profession and live in Australia.

I'm thinking about applying for visa mid 2015 then I think I have 5 years before I have to make the move. I have my skills assessment.

How come civil engineering is still on their skilled occupations list?

I do fancy the Australian lifestyle so I'll probably move there at some point any way but I want to find the right time.

The sol and csol lists are not a representation of the demand or lack of in any particular occupation.
My own occupation is still on the csol despite the unemployment rate being almost 40% and our governing body begging the government to remove it.

It certainly is expensive with immigration being an economic mainstay and business.
I would not gauge job availability to what is listed on the skills occupations list at least in any meaningful way of judging skill shortages.
The fact being employment is waning in a whole lot of areas and costs being reduced to match.
With the declining wages and high costs it could well be preferable to take a look before jumping in especially if a couple or family.

Declining wages? I can only speak for myself, but I didn't get a pay rise in the UK from 2008 - 2010 like most people in the UK at that time, but I have never failed to get one in Oz from 2010-2014.

Either way, neither the UK or Oz has produced declining wages for me. As I said I can only speak for myself.

Do you have any evidence that wages are declining?

Best time to think like a backpacker

Economies and industries go up and down. What you feel the industry is doing this year may change next.

Invest in your future - part with the cash.

National incomes are falling as per official stats (RBA or ABS I'm not sure)

But this is just a reflection of the supply and demand for labour

There is less demand for labour (unemployment rising etc) so its cost is falling

It's inevitable

I found this at the ABS. 6302.0 - Average Weekly Earnings, Australia, May 2014

Evidence abounds that wages are not keeping up with cost of living rises.

Of course escalating housing inflation over the years has long departed from norms.

Funny how figures can be presented differently isn't it?

Ok so wage rises are not keeping up with cost of living rises, rather than wages declining?
