Hardest thing can be finding an import, what with all this brewed under license malarkey.
No longer touch Heineken, Becks, Carlsberg, Stella (occassionaly get import Stella in Dan Murphy's).
Doing the rounds at the minute Lowenbrau @ $40, plus a bit of imprted Grolsch about at the minute.
Of the locals, most of the James Squire stuff is pretty good. Cascade Premium is alright especially now it is back in 375ml stubbies.
I would say you can get a decent carton for $40, be it an import or local premium. The top notch gear more like $50.
Dan Murphys is the best shop in Australia.

I've seen people banned for less.

Is it wrong for me to admit that I love drinking ice cold VB?

As usual, it takes a while to find the places. RSL's and Leagues Clubs have cheap beer (bit like British Legion clubs but with decent food and entertainment). Just like in London, bars in CBD will charge higher than suburbs but there are bargains to find if you follow the 'Happy Hour Trail'!!
For example, this weekend, we are watching the NZ v Ireland and England v Australia rugby matches in Scruffy Murphys (never a more apt name!!) on Goulbuorn St in the CBD, pitchers of XXX Gold beer (could be shite but hey, my palate is dead now anyway!) for $7, each pitcher holds 3 schooners...so not a bad price.

Jeez mate, that Scruffy Murphy's has been mentioned a lot in the papers. Apparently lots of bother in there.

So if you like beer that tastes papery, by all means, keep on looking for the imported stuff.
However, if you like fresh beer that tastes exactly the same as the fresh beer from the "home" country (eg Holland for Heineken) then please buy the beer brewed under licence locally (for Heineken this is Lion Nathan).
I know for a fact that samples are sent to Holland each month to be checked by the Dutch taste panel and that Australian brewed Heineken is rated very highly.
VB is only brewed in two locations in Australia (Melbourne and Yatala, QLD) and also has to travel a lot of miles to get to the rest of the country.

Re: Cheap beer in Oz, does it exist?
my aussie beers of choice vary, but I'll normally go for one of these:
cascade premium
coopers pale ale
VB
little creatures pale ale , or golden ale
sometimes I will even drink xxxx gold.
Least favourite beer : carlton mid.
