Well it's only $10 because it's on offer (but has been for a good couple of months) at Liquourland, 2 boxes (4l each) of McWilliams Hillside Columbard Chardonnay for $20. Absolute bargain and it tastes really nice.

An expensive pint in Brisbane is $8, but most pubs are $6.50 or $7. Practically all pubs around here have various happy hours too with cheaper deals.
Beer in Aus used to be cheap, but not any more.

Cool, might give it go, I have a gift voucher with LiquorLand's name on it ... not that it would stop me if I didn't

Keep out of the pubs and join one of the RSL type clubs. Probably cost $20 for three years membership, tops, and you get the beer subsidized by the pokies... well at least in NSW you do. Locally it will be a MAX of $4 a schooner in any club.

Wine by the box can be pretty good and cheap, like $15 for a 2 litres box.
Beer prices do vary a lot, there was a story on the news yesterday saying that costs vary by up to 40%, with the supermarket owned bottleo's the most expensive. You can't buy alcohol in the supermarkets, cheapest I've seen advertised is about $32 per carton around Sydney.
Of course I've only been here a few weeks, but seem to have picked this all up pretty quick
BTW "drinking out" can be very expensive, $14 for 2 beers on Darling Harbor, $3.5 "happy hour" beers in Sydney CBD. Then again, I've had a great steak special for $10 again on Darling Harbor.

Yep probably the way to go. Wine here (UK) is expensive generally.

I've seen a post on here about "What did you buy at Aldi today" or similar. Good wine at Aldi for a reasonable price including some cleanskins. Yes, there is vino calapso as well. Do they do any decent beer at a decent price?

We do buy a lot of red wine from www.graysonline.com. You have to bid and then it is delivered straight to your door!!

Have a look on http://www.boozle.com.au/ for beer prices. Tend to set a limit of $40 for a slab (of 375ml stubbies). Most of the beers are on offer at this price or below (even crown) occasionally. Dan Murphy will price match, so keep those flyers.
We buy the Stanley 4L casks of reds (don't really like the whites so much). They often have it on offer at 2 for $20. Tend to go for those that name the variety of wine eg merlot, rather than 'medium red'. Wife is a bit of a snob and thinks the 4L is rubbish. She bought a Yalumba 2L for more $$ and I honestly don't think it is as good.
Usually buy bottles of white and take these for BYO. Jacobs creek are about $7 and usually OK.

home brew shops do seem to be popular in a lot of towns. some of it can taste quite good if you know what you are doing.

Try Dan Murphys or Harry Brown in Perth for some better priced beer. You're never going to get the deals you can from Tesco etc in the UK, less demand, less competition and higher alcohol taxes here. Wine however is much much cheaper, even if you can't bring yourself to drink the cask stuff you can't beat a good $20-30 bottle of red from WA or SA, you'd be paying way way more in England to get an equivalent drop.
