MMM If Melbourne is a ghost town how come the daily population of the CBD is higher than that of Sydney's CBD?
Also Melbournes population is 4 million about a few hundred thousand less of Sydney but it is Austrlalias fastest growing City, but the projected forecasts state Melbourne will overtake Sydney in the next 15 years.

This might suprise a few but look at the urban area sizes of Australias biggest cities
Melbourne: 2152.8 sq km
Brisbane: 1825.9 sq km
Sydney: 1788.1 sq km

It always seems quite busy when I've been there.

My theory is Sydney feels busier because it's got more tourists. I drive to Melbourne CBD every day which is relatively easy and stress free. Its significantly quieter in Melbourne than Sydney.

Probably. I agree - all the tourists hang around the harbour, Darling Harbour etc.

It can be quite hard to notice tourists in Melbourne CBD especially in winter save for the odd backpacker few and far between.

Agree - the CBD in Melb is for the corporates. The backbackers and working holiday makers are very noticeable in St Kilda, Lygon, Sth Yarra...a lot of them work at the cafes.

Hah - very funny, in fact the poster is absolutely correct - night time winter temperatures in Melbourne do not get as low as night time winter temperatures in parts of QLD.

Summer daytime temperatures in Melbourne are hotter too but that is not a good thing.....

Definitely not a good thing, but you'll never convince someone reading this in front of their computers, with their central heating on full bore, back in the UK.

I thought that the temps this Summer were the best in the 5 years we have been here, only a couple of scorching hot days

True they were. I've been an outdoor worker in the past though, and boy was it hell in February.

Ipswich might be colder than places in Melbourne on a given night. You could arrive at this by looking at many figures. I wouldn't quibble over the stats, my point is that this is quite possible.

The cloud cover limits Melbourne's lows. It's no accident that the sunniest days follow or precede a colder night. Our lows average about 7 degrees over winter. Almost mild in climate terms.

One of the coldest nights I recall as a backpacker, was in sunny Coff's Harbour in August.

If he had said QLD I would have agreed straight up as well, but he said "suburban Brisbane". Even had he said Ipswich I might have even bothered to check, but not good old Brissie
