Have you tried applying toothpaste to the bites? Some say that helps.
As Alfresco said, garlic helps keep them away.

I shall pop in the chemists tomorrow - and pick up a repellent while I'm there as well

Stop Itch is cheaper in the supermarket than chemist. Toothpaste has worked for me, too when desperate...

The little sods love me and I found that eating a couple of slices of toast with Vegemite stopped all mosquito interest in me after a few days. It even works on the mosquitoes in Brazil as I found out on my 2 visits there this year. I believe it's because of the vitamin b content.

There is also no such thing as some people who are bitten and some arent. Everyone is bitten to the same amount. But some people do not react to the bite. This can change in different countries - for example, i do not react to the bites here, but i do to the mossquitos over the border in the Congo.
We get about 60 cases of malaria per year. Half will report never having been bitten.

I used to take a mega B2? I think...
There is some element of it that they beggars hate.
Before: Bushmans. If unlucky..
After: www.mosquitoclick.com.
This is a small 'gun' thing. You put the head of it over the welt that shows up almost immediately, and click (press the top down). It gives a very mild zap, and neutralizes the itch. it is best used straight after a bite,-I keep mine on a cord around my neck if I'm out at dawn, or in partic, returning at dusk-those are their high times!
I was cautious; it's about $20 from the chemist, but it worked-for me.
Product Review has 12 reviews on it currently. 10 are glowing; 2 said it had no effect.
Irrespective of all that mosquito's are the biggest killers in the World,-yes even more than the human. They really can carry some nasty virus' in Aus.
Preventive is far better than cure.

The rumours sprung up prior to the internet when people confused DEET with DDT. Nowadays you can look up Deet & find the full chemical composition ditto DDT which is a proven carcinogenic.
I've tried Repel-it which is a picaridin based product. It worked with mossies but appeared useless against sandflies, I was covered in red spots after a fishing trip.
I did try kidding Deb that beer had excellent repellent properties. Carlton Mid drinkers do suffer a lot less bites than Fourex Gold drinkers in an extensive study I carried out a while ago.

BTW I think a beer study is an excellent idea, I volunteer
