Do you need the beach....or just water? No beaches, but you could try bayside suburbs e.g. Cleveland, Wellington Point, Manly. But if you want a 40 minute commute (Manly) you'll need to take the train.

We live in Redcliffe, which is Northside. We have beaches but not as good as Sunshine coast. They do us though and the commute is about 30 mins by train, anywhere up to an hour by car.

Re: best beach suburbs bisbane
As has been stated already, there are no real beach suburbs in Brisbane.
Brisbane city is on the Brisbane river. If you follow the river about 15km downstream it spills out into Moreton Bay. The mouth of the river is pretty industrial, with the port one side and the airport on the other.
Moreton Bay could be described as a giant "sea estuary" . It is usually calm and very pleasant for boating. The mainland coastline is sheltered from the waves of the pacific by Moreton Island and North Stradbroke island. Moreton bay is actually very beautiful, all manner of aquatic life can be found there. The fishing is superb and there are good dive sites too.
Because the two big islands act as barriers against the waves of the pacific, the waterside suburbs closest to Brisbane don't have really great beaches or any surf (scarborough, redcliffe) or, they don't have any beaches at all (Wynnum, Wello point, down to redland bay). This doesn't mean that these places aren't nice places to live....in fact, many of them are really nice areas.
If you drive 50km north of Brisbane you'll be level with the top of Moreton island...but then there is another big island blocking the ocean, this one is called Bribie island, it is largely a national park.
Its the same story south of Brisbane....Drive 50km and then you are level with south stradbroke island, another nature reserve.
So to cut a long story short, the closest proper beaches to brisbane are 80km on the northside (caloundra) and 70km on the southside (Main Beach)....unfortunately if you move to brisbane, you won't be able to live near the beach and have a 35-40min commute.... it will be more like 1.5hrs on a good day, up to 2.5hrs on a bad day.
cheers

How much do you want to spend?
Like the others have said , 30mins doesn't get you very far in rush hour even south bank might be pushing it

Woody point is about 22 klms from the CBD, incredibly cheap if you look at the price of beachside suburbs for eg 22 klms from melbourne or sydney.
At the mo its easily 30 mins to the city, but 2 major road upgrades are planned one a new bridge which will link you to the to the city, and another upgrade to the airport. We needed a brisbane house and bought there 6 mos ago, since then the council have started construction on a 9 million dollar jetty/pier out over the sea, aquatic feature, underwater reef thank you council its right outside our front door
I know people say brisbane has no beaches, quite right no surf beaches but theres a lot of suburbs with water pretty close by. We have a whacking great bay in front of us its as pretty as any bay on a sunny day, will be even better soon once council finishes our new water feature

Great isnt it, handy being home in less than a minutes walk too The fish and chippie in the village isnt bad either, its looks old and shabby but always packed $6 for fish and chips on the beachfront.
