At our favourite restaurant here, a bottle of San Mig light is 80 pesos but a cup of drip coffee is 90 pesos! even in the best hotels, coffee is more than a bottle of local beer....

Hard to compete with The Philippines when it comes to pricing. But then wages are low which is why of course so many of the locals are forced abroad to earn a living. Also crime rates rather high there.

But there are plenty of locations over Asia where one can live a pretty decent life at a cost that would go nowhere in Australia.

No wonder why the Australian government has made it next to impossible for their pensioners to move over if on a state pension.
A shame as they barely survive in Australia, with the high costs, but could actually live a life in Asia.

True, wages are low - minimum wage in our area is 375pesos a DAY! By comparison with the locals we are well off with our UK pensions but as with Australia we would struggle back in UK with the cost of everything. The biggest advantage of the UK is there is safety net in benefits etc but here - nothing! --no unemployment benefit, very little health benefit and a minuscule pension. A sugar tax was introduced in January and the cost of even basic commodities has gone up as sugar is in nearly all the food here. A can of soda has gone up on average by 15/20%, bread around 5%, sauces with which Filipinos smother food by about 8% etc. for us, not a big deal but for the locals a large problem.
We've been here 5 years as residents and to be honest we read about the various crimes in the papers but have never seen any first hand and feel perfectly safe walking around the city. Yes, there are "no go" areas but so there are in most cities in the world.

Interesting post. I wonder if your stay in The Philippines will be a permanent one? What do you think of ageing there?

AS for coffee and beer I rather like Laos. Beer Lao probably one of the most unknown decent beers and great coffee with the French connection. Great bread in the French style as well. Cambodia would also come very close but neither probably candidates for retirement as medical services do lack.

Malaysia a country know very well would probably rank the highest although not perfect. Never been to The Philippines so should correct that at some stage.

Philippines born migrants are about the fifth largest contingent in Australia. And growing steadily.

Plenty of Aussies knock Perth. And Adelaide. And indeed Australia in cases where they have established themselves in UK or Europe.

Actually I moved to Perth from a long stay in France. Wise move? Probably not. But times where different.

Wow, that is cheap. What strings are attached to this deal?

On a side note, it's amazing how secretive (and what a no-no) it is to make prices open & clear in Aussie pubs. In general you're NOT supposed to know how much everything costs and you're NOT supposed to ask how much something costs (if you want a classic case of stink eye just start asking how much a pint of this or that costs! ). You're merely supposed to state what you'd like and then pay whatever price you are told.

Well the publicity has got them noticed for one thing. The place is apparently full now, which goes a way to point out the reason.

I do take your point regarding prices though. A number of cafes here regard themselves as so cool as to not display the price of their coffee, for example. I always ask in such situations, if at all bother to stay and if not appropriate say very clearly that I find it too expensive.
Same for beer and had to ask on St Patricks Day the [price of a pint ($10) as couldn't see it advertised.

I suppose any number don't ask, don't want to be thought a cheap skate or something similar.
