Re: BBC - Wanted Down Under
What makes me laugh about the program is that they give them the option of "City" "Coast" or "Country" and make it sound like they are miles and miles away from each other.
I was watching the one the other day about Napier in NZ and how they were given the three options, and as far as I can remember Napier is on the sea, so you could be in the city and be by the coast at the same time, and you could probably be in the country not long after leaving the city centre why cant' they just say they are giving them 3 options of jobs to choose from, and show them houses in different parts of Napier????

I lived in Napier 3 years ago now, and as you have said Napier is on the sea, and the coastal areas that they showed the family is on the end of town by the docks and the airport, not my cup of tea at all. I can't remember the couple but didn't she work in the school. The school that she went to for the coast was actually in Napier inself and the school (Taradale Primary) that was offered with the City living was actually further out of town than the one she went to!!!!!
But as he said def too quiet that why I wanted to come home - and did - and now off to Oz

This is no use to people outside the UK unless you can tell us how to fake ip addresses, the only way we can see these programs is to download them from bittorrent sites.

Suppose it's aimed at UK folk really, so BBC is not aiming it at a world audiance.

I agree. In one episode they had Dunedin (city), St Clair (coast) and Kaikorai Valley (country). I always knew these last two as suburbs of Dunedin. Both are about 5km, or 10 mins, from the city centre!

My wife was telling me about it yesterday evening and without seeing it I could easily picture a) the woman and b) the reality of their marriage!
He had a c'est la vie acceptance of it all but in my opinion...MUG!!!
What a calculating person she was....fair play...she knew what she wanted and nothing was going to stop her, but being married and having full support while she underwent her studying was crucial to her being where she is now..pity she doesn't seem to remember that herself!!!

Thursday's show on WDU the old guy. Well anyone living or from the North West, (Manc's of Scousers) will have heard of a guy called Bob Grieves. He was a news reader/anchorman with Granada TV for years. Well he was the old guy on the show on Thursday. (looks about 90) He had a really sort of matter of fact attitude, and I don't see how the BBC could have been serious, How could he settle in Tropical Queensland for God's sake. He didn't have a good word to say about Oz, and I found him an embarrassment. Sonia his wife was calm and cool when he was just so negative.
As for his lady wife Sonia, they have been together for many years, probably I'd say 20 odd years. I remember her on TV with him years ago. She's in her 40's obviously under 45, and She's a very genuine and kind person, doing a lot of work for charity in the Manchester area. A really nice warm person. Probably as a young girl, she fell for a middle aged BOB at the time, but I have to say there didn't look much left in the relationship yesterday on the TV. She clearly has her ambitions and dreams at this stage of her life and we should admire that and wish her well. As for Bob, I'd say he's had his time, lived life to the full, and now just want's to live peacefully. It's a bit of a sad situation I think. I couldn't understand how he was moaning about house prices and cost of living though, 35 years working for Granada and on mainline TV, must be OK financially surely.
I hope Sonia goes after her dreams, she chose Australia when they made the decison with Nadia back in UK, so I say go for it Sonia. Also lad's She has always been an absolutely belting looking girl, and still does. So if I can be of any assistance to her down in Brisbane, Well Sonia Luv, I'm ya man. She's bloody gorgeous!!

Yep, I missed the beginning and thought it was her dad too!! He was quite sprightly for his age though. I thought she was selfish and only seemed to want to have the life that would suit her...and seemed to think they could afford the most expensive house. Apparantly last year a 103 year old emigrated to Oz so he should go for it!
The whole episode did annoy the hell out of me as they showed two expensive houses (above the average I reckon) and the cheaper one had no garden! The they harped on about the price of bananas..like you can then say Cairns is sooo expensive based on one item!
The he said that you had to travel 20 mins from Kewarra beach to get a coffee or groceries..not true.
I think for people watching the programme who havn't done research it put a negative slant on the place.
I love Cairns and can't wait to be there..I will pay twice as much as English prices for fresh bananas, and eat them by the sea!!
They also make it sound expensive by putting the couples up in a £500 a week holiday let...again making the place sound expensive.
I did like the house with the pool though, the 550,000 dollar one. I thought it was worth that personally and exactly the type of house I intend to buy eventually...try getting something like that for £220,000 in England.
At least they showed the beach areas a bit.
Am I imagining it or do they show more housing, work stuff than the area on the programmes about Cairns, whereas other places they seem to show the coast a bit more??
Anyway, had my rant. At least I got to see Cairns on T.V. That is all I need!!

I agree about the accommodation, why did they need to be in such a huge rental for the two of them? And the couple themselves were saying that they didn't need to look at such huge homes!
They always do it.
The one thing I will say, is that even though I doubt very much we will end up in that neck of the woods, I thought Cairns looked stunning and would love to go and have a look!

The WDU programmes certainly stir up some discussions which is exactly what the BBC want.
IF it was all sweetness and light we wouldn't have anything to ciriticise.
Makes for great discussions especially those people that know the persons on the programme.
Must say Sonia looked good - I originally thought she was in her early thirties till I saw her Son, so good on her - Good Luck Sonia in whatever you choose and it looked like your family were right behind you.
Good Luck also to all you people still waiting for visas like me :-(

Hi Liz
The cost of a pair of bananas for a £1 while sitting on cairns sea front by a beautiful swimming lagoon in the sunshine all for free.
Some people dont know they were born
All my research shows that there is far more affordable housing in Cairns than what was shown were better off without them
Sparky wife you will be more than welcome to join us all in a barbie if you ever decide to make the trip Liz is cooking oh sorry was it Bix I know it was one of you....

Thanks for the offer Wardy, ahem, I have a 'ikle secret....thought Cairns looked hot (and I just don't mean in temperature ). Funny how you don't even register a place, and then something triggers it off.
Sparky Hub, can we go on a holiday when we land??!!
