Interesting article in The West Australian:

"They have been stereotyped as impoverished dishwashers and fruit pickers, but backpackers working in WA are routinely earning more than $60,000 a year because of the State’s chronic labour shortage, according to Perth’s biggest backpacker recruitment agency....."

This is also the same Newspaper that quotes unskilled labourers on sites in Perth earning in excess of $110k a year working a 36hr week. I would take what you read in this paper with a pinch of salt. Wa and Perth is alledegely the highest paid part of the country for Qualified tradies and i have yet to meet any that earn that much for a 36 hr week

Mr Robbins’ travelling companion, Lee Denning, a 22-year-old plasterer from Bristol, said he came to Perth because he had heard it was not only nice and relaxed, but the place to go to line your pockets. “There’s so much opportunity here,” he said. “Perth is known in Britain as a place to go for money, especially if you are a tradesman, a plasterer or something. It’s known for all the work and how easygoing it is.”
is this still the case though? I don't really know too much about trade work, but i suspect that we've come to the end of this particular cycle and we won't be seeing so many utes on the roads as we've become accustomed to.

the two in this report must be then the very few that have work on construction sites. Reading the 'Update Forum' paints a different picture. British brikkies and alike are hanging around contruction sites asking for work and those who have work seems to struggle to make ends meet. Let's face it, construction is drying up and those working in hospitality never earned big money, although overpriced retaurant meals in Perth give the impression that somebody is earning money in the industry.

House contruction may be on the wane in Perth, but commerical construction is still booming - if not accelerating. I work in East Perth and there at least 20 apartment blocks being built at the moment - with probably the same number planned. In the CBD there are loads of buildings going up. Go over to South Perth and have a look across the river to the city and see all the cranes.
