Re: Australian population and immigration growth slows
Without China, I think Au would sink in the economic mire!!!
That's why a lot Chinese are here..
Is that a fair statement?
I have even heard of ppl that the Chinese are boosting the housing market here and contributing to the shortagsd and price hike faced by the locals..:eek

Japan 22.2%
China 14.6% ($23.6b)
Australia's imports however:
China 15.4% ($24.8b)
US 12.1%
The Chinese do appear to be boosting the high end property market.
Some interesting figures on the student commencements from official figures:
67,663 Feb 2010
45,042 Mar 2010
20,552 Apr 2010
And some article says they are dropping fast
But they overlooked the fact that most commencements happen at the beginning of the year, February.
Take 2008 for example:
63,356 Feb 2008
34,070 Mar 2008
20,575 Apr 2008
The current year is so far 13% higher than 2008, or 26% higher than 2007.

Add them two together and you get almost 40% of the export market! Scary!
Eggs in one basket almost!

There are hell of lot of Koreans around here, most people mistake them for Chinese but I can tell the difference between the two languages

Overseas student enrolments and commencements are an example of time lags and spikes in data i.e. AL3 & 4 countries such as China would have commencements from old visa system filtering through till 2011 (on packaged courses e.g. 1 year ELICOS + university).
Many students would have been hurried up in 2009 by mooted and actual visa changes as of 31 Dec 09, i.e. higher financial reqs and added to that routine lead times of up to 6 months for visa decisions..... student planning is minimum one year ahead....
Slow down in growth reported today by Melbourne Age "New PM's shift on data at odds with data".
With overseas students affecting short term population (not immigration) data so much, key points will be the August university census (which they probabaly know already and suggested to be lower), then October (for prep course starters) and most significant April 2011....
