So that sounds just like the crap my wife used to get in Australia and our Kiwis friends used to get. Happens everywhere.

2010/11 - 53,700

2007 - 55,600
between 1979 and 2007 - average of 44,000 per year
1979 - 64,100

So 50,000 is a fairly accurate figure.

In New Zealand it's known as "the brain drain".

I can still remember an article on the box, from a couple of years ago, that said, if the same amount of people were coming to Australia from Indonesia, as were arriving from NZ, it would be described as a 'refugee crisis'

In NZ not termed a brain drain but a way of "improving the average IQ of the two countries"

I think a lot depends on the individual. But interesting what the press can get away with.

Imagine replacing the disgusting Brits with Indians in this article for instance

But this article seems to be pretty self-deprecating to the Australians.

I can't imagine any New Zealander EVER being self-deprecating.

Yesterday I posted a question on facebook mainly aimed at teachers I know, about a word on my daughters spelling list from school. A mature two-sided discussion resulted, except from a Kiwi who decided the best way to respond was to point out how ignorant generally all Australians are.

It should have been called embarrassing comments, unfortunately typical of the huge chip on the shoulder. Its just pathetic to be honest. Look at some of the comnents after the 'story', some people live in a dream world, they seem to base their view of this country on a Charles Dickens book

What a ridiculous sweeping statement, surely even with you extremely skewed view of Australia and Australians you dont in all honesty view Australians in any way self deprecating?

My view is skewed - skewed towards Melbourne and the people I encounter here.

And I find many of them self-deprecating about Australia. I was very surprised to find people who live here sometimes start their sentences "I wish here we did it like they do in England/USA/wherever". Before I lived here I never expected to hear that sentiment at all.

Well all I can say is that people must be very different in Melbourne then

I have never heard that ever, unless it's moaning about prices. Most Aussies look down on Americans as fat, stupid and rednecks - without realising how similar they are.
