Re: Australia, or New Zealand.
I am afraid my Ozzie wife got constant Oz-bashing in New Zealand over the 3 years we were in Wellington. Constant, and relentless snide comments the whole time we lived there. Little digs about Australia, how New Zealand was so much better than Oz, mostly from people who knocked the Country but were mad keen to move over and earn A$.

Re: Australia, or New Zealand.
OK, well you've forced me to look it up.
Permanent and long term departures of New Zealand citizens from New Zealand -
2008/9 - 52,500
2009/10 - 40,400
2010/11 - 53,700
Source http://www.dol.govt.nz/publications/...picture/03.asp
2007 - 55,600
between 1979 and 2007 - average of 44,000 per year
1979 - 64,100
Source http://www.stats.govt.nz/browse_for_...departure.aspx
So 50,000 is a fairly accurate figure.
In New Zealand it's known as "the brain drain".

In NZ not termed a brain drain but a way of "improving the average IQ of the two countries"

I honk a lot depends on the individual. But interesting what the press can get away with.

I can't imagine any New Zealander EVER being self-deprecating.
Yesterday I posted a question on facebook mainly aimed at teachers I know, about a word on my daughters spelling list from school. A mature two-sided discussion resulted, except from a Kiwi who decided the best way to respond was to point out how ignorant generally all Australians are.

But this article seems to be pretty self-deprecating to the Australians.

And I find many of them self-deprecating about Australia. I was very surprised to find people who live here sometimes start their sentences "I wish here we did it like they do in England/USA/wherever". Before I lived here I never expected to hear that sentiment at all.

I have never heard that ever, unless it's moaning about prices. Most Aussies look down on Americans as fat, stupid and rednecks - without realising how similar they are.
