Re: AUS-house prices..why so high?
We have more demand for skilled staff in Darwin than Adelaide.
SA, and Adelaide in particular, struggles to attract migrants - both international and interstate. The reason for this is the lack of economic opportunities and house prices reflect this. Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane all growing rapidly. Adelaide is not.
I have worked with loads of engineering people from Adelaide who have relocated to Perth. Very few decent jobs for them over there and salaries are much lower for the jobs that are available.

Adelaide will be a ghost town when Holden and associated manufacturing eventually have to leave. I dont mind Adelaide really but there isnt much to attract migrants to be honest.

The answer is simple and comes in 3 parts.
1. Easy availability of credit.
2. A rigged tax system I.e. negative gearing.
3. Lack of iodine in the Australian diet.

2015 - australian interest rates at 0.5% and the RBA wonder why house prices, the lifeblood of the economy, still aren't rising

The big Weapons Research Establishment (DSTO) at Salisbury also closed down, but Salisbury didn't die, it has expanded at a rapid rate with big housing developments at Golden Grove and Mawson Lakes.
However, I must admit that Adelaide hasn't grown like the other main centres, but it is currently undergoing a promotion for migrants.

It could be some time, GM have guaranteed quite a few years yet and there are some good contracts in the pipeline. Also, it was believed that Adelaide would be devastated when Chrysler fell by the wayside, but it was taken over by Mitsubishi. Eventually Mitsubishi withdrew, but Adelaide didn't close down.

There doesnt appear to be any guarantees from what I have been reading, lots of threats to pull out if the Government doesnt keep pouring cash into the company. This makes interesting reading, basically the taxpayer is just paying the profits.
