I'm glad I don't work in Gov then.

I am heading to Melbourne end of Sept. I contacted a few recruitment agencies to see what way the jobs market was in my field (Accountant) they said that temp opportunites are available once I am flexible. Was a bit concerned as my ACCA qualifcation is not recognised there but they have put my mind somewhat at ease.

Can any accountants working in Oz give me a "real" idea of the jobs market right now and what kind of salaries are available. BTW I am ACCa qualified with 5 years experience working in practice.

Thanks

Quick unscientific check, number of IT jobs per Capital on seek today (and I know there will be duplicates, but this is true of all)

Adelaide 303
Perth 760
Brisbane 1612
Melbourne 4604
Sydney 8154

Interesting, even when you factor for population
I see 488 IT jobs for Perth. Now, maybe you don't know how the IT field is but it's got a TON of specializations. The 488 includes software developers, system administrators, network engineers, telecommunications engineers, project managers, IT sales people, business analysts. Now let's take the software development, business analysis or project manager -these can be further broken down into dozens of different technologies and platforms. At the end of the day - not a whole lot is left for the ever increasing number of employees. Now, me and my partner have good jobs so not really a concern.

Sorry I can't advise you specifically about accountancy but in professional services in general the market in Melbourne seems to be exceptionally good at the moment.

Been here 3 months now and the wife still looking for work. Its a drawn out process even for part time low paid jobs. You also competing with approx 1.5 million others. Gold Coast and Brisbane is just too busy for me personally and thats all you get is you should try living in Melbourne and Sydney. It was great stuck in traffic for hours coming off the gateway motorway entering Springwood last Friday. Not improved my quality of life so will be looking to move somewhere quieter as I am able to move about with my job. I have become a whinging pom already lol

Actually I do.

I've worked in IT for 24 years, starting as a programmer, and am currently working in a senior technical role in an investment bank (also a "good job").

What I was illustrating is that the IT job market in Perth is small, which I think you also said yourself in a previous post.

I always find that those figures are hard to interpret without knowing how many applicants are chasing those same jobs - not that I expect you to find the numbers . For example, Sydney and Melbourne are so often pushed as the only places to go for IT that they must have far more immigrant and interstate applicants heading their way then the other capitals.

I sometimes think the unemployment numbers, current and predicted, might be a better guide to the chances of getting a job than raw number of available jobs (unless you work in a specialty that is only available in Sydney/Melbourne).

That's exactly right. I always use the unemployment figures to ascertain the health of the employment market and break it down into sectors.

For example, the national unemployment figure might be 5.2% but in IT it might be 12%. So, not good news for jobs in IT.

For the avoidance of doubt, I just made the above figures up so if you work in IT, it isn't that bad.

You don't know the state by state figures by any chance?

For employment as a whole or just for IT? Not off the top of my head. I would have to go and look them up.

Not even close although sometimes it can have the appearance of being that way. It also depends on the sector of IT as well. Different specialisations have different supply and demand.

Here it is state by state as a whole.
