Default Any Radiographers wanting to work in Oz?

If you are a radiographer and want to emigrate here, don't be attracted by the "we need you" policy!
You see, they do need us, but are absolutely and unnecessarily strict.
Who do they think they are? The human body is the same, as are the computers!!

Ok, if you've read this far, you must be a radiographer so I'll elaborate...

I qualified in South Africa in 1986, then got world class experience in Jhb. Gen Hosp. and Hillbrow Hospitals before travelling over to the UK and working in wellknown hospitals ie St. Thomas, Grt. Ormond Street, London Bridge and many more.
I settled in Aberdeen, Scotland where I worked for 6 yrs before giving it up for having children.

After not working for 7 yrs I went back doing DEXA scanning , but had to be supervised for 90 days no matter if it was full/ part-time. No problem and I loved going back and picked up very fast.

Came to Oz - Melbourne, Victoria. What do they want???

I have to get accredited ie get my exact study programme from South Africa 20 odd years ago, hours in lectures/ hrs. practical/ every job detailed SINCE then, hrs. in each dept. etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc

AND pay $800 for them to just read it all AND they take at least 16 weeks to decide IF I'M QUALIFIED IN THEIR EYES!!!
before they decide what I need to do to be accepted here and I've heard that I'll probably need to retrain because I've only done specialised work and not basic in the last 10 years!!

I spoke to a professor recently who said the people at the top are admins. who know nothing about the actual job!
It infuriates me because this country is so desperate for us but make it so damn hard!

Anyone else in the same position??:curse:

I am in almost exactly the same position. I qualified in 96 and worked all over South Africa up until I had my oldest son in 2004. Thereafter I went back to a part time position only. I tried to find out about having my skills recognised and because I have only been working part time for the last 4 years, they want me to repeat a year of study. I have done specialised CT courses and have even worked at a dedicated mammography clinic in Israel but they are only interested in the transcripts from my years of study (which they charge astronomical amounts to reproduce) and the specific machines (who can remember evey one) which I have worked on during the years as well as all the other stuff you mentioned.
Anyway luckily my husbands career is on the MODL list so we have applied for a 175 in his name and I am studying various computer/ office admin courses as I have just given up on the radiography route.
Good Luck to you in your endeavours to get your radiography recognised.

Me me!
Just found your thread after doing a search for radiographer, so a tad late...

I am a german radiographer, 2 years work experience in Germany (general and mostly CT) and in AUS for a year now, not working - own and DPs choice. I have of course been thinking about getting assessed by AIR, but as we had only planned to stay 3 years initially I didnt bother. Now we are thinking about staying longer, so it might be worth it. It does seem a complicated and long process though. Also, my education being german I dont see many chances of getting full assessment, and will surely have to retrain at least some years. Scanning the ads for casual Xray assistant jobs ATM...

So have you actually sent in your application for AIR assessment? If yes I reckon no news yet?

It is just so frustrating! When people hear I'm a radiographer they go "oh wow, they must be queuing up for hiring you!" no they are not!
I had a chuckle whilst having a sonogramm and I was telling the australian sonographer I would have to be assessed and most certainly retrain, and she said - why, do the Ozzies have do dumb you down a bit?
One would reckon Xrays work in a similar way as in other places in the world but apparently the go down under
Of course I realise they have to make sure you can actually do the job, but wouldnt a simple assessment and maybe even a practical one - work-for-nothing-under-supervision-kind-of-thing be a start??

Good luck with finding a job out there!
