Still, I suppose it goes along with the logic of the statement that most of us ended up in Aus cos we couldn't get into California

@chris955: Although I live in Ireland now, I think the mentality is the same.
We have a covered terrace here and I sit out most of the year. If it gets cold in winter I have a chiminea. You can easily have an outdoor life here, but a lot of the time people just moan, because they want to. Our neighbours kids are never bothered about weather and usually play outside all day. There's so much to do in Europe and in my case a flight from Dublin to Barcelona would only be 2h 30mins. Although Ireland is always classed as expensive (Ireland section), I can easily manage and don't have a high paid job.

Then he should say so. And the UK and many other places in northern Europe have had some pretty major floods....to say nothing of other disasters.

I like Ireland but the weather is horrid. No outdoor lifestyle at al. Glad you can sit outside you must love your thermals

I dont know why there is this ridiculous belief that it has to be hot to be able to have any outdoor lifestyle. What do kids in these places do ? They play outside just like kids anywhere else. Excessive heat can also make being outdoors uncomfortable and even impossible.

The poster you're replying to was simply giving her opinion, according to her situation - not slagging off the UK (and some people say Aussies are precious!), nor singing Australia's praises - so I'm not sure why you posted all that 'good country/bad country' crap?As for "if you didn't have a good job in Australia, you'd have a different opinion" - do you know the poster and her circumstances? If not - how about you leave off the assumptions about people's private lives?

It's actually quite mild in Ireland and I have shorts on most of the day. It's the wind that's cold if you're not used to it, but you can get windproof clothing these days. Spouse of scouse took it personal which is fine. It's really a shame that people only believe you can have an outdoor life when it's 40 degrees and your kids need SPF 50. What I like about the Nordics is that people don't base their life on weather and appreciate what they have (could learn from them). Ireland actually has a great climate and I've never had a better tan, because you can spend the whole day outside in the garden. Sure we get showers, but it can be over in 5 mins and the sun is out again. It's bright until 11 pm in the summer, so even better. If I really need loads of sun, Spain is just around the corner.

We went out for the day yesterday with an English family, they are returning back to the UK, long story, but work and friends are there main reasons. They have given it two years and are dreading the heat and humidity, plus its been really cold this winter. They cannot settle here, it will never feel like home to them.
So we got chatting last night as a family, and we are now considering going back, only thinking about it but we only have to give twoo weeks notice at work and on our house. So we could be back by the end of September. Just wondering is there anyone else considering gboing back to the UK, or have gone back and are still there? Any regrets or anything. Australia has good points and bad points, we did a list last night and the bad points for us as a family slightly outweigh its good points.

Cold winter? Where do you live? I wouldn't be putting that on the table if your heart really wants to move back to the UK.
