In Queensland they are known as mechanical plumbers - pipefitters are more or less boiler makers. Which state are you in? May be able to answer some questions for you. We are originally from London area.

When you say Pipefitter/Boilermaker do mean fitting and fabricating larger bore stuff - or the smaller screwed stuff?
For what its worth my TRA assessment is as a "Mech Services and Air Conditioning Plumber" although I've worked for years between the HVAC & Building Services Industry - and in the Auto Industry on the Installation of Automated Tooling and related plant and equipment.
Any tips? I'd sooner stick to the Auto Industry (hence Adelaide) side of things if I can as I believe there are fewer restrictions regarding licensing, etc. Can you confirm?
Cheers -
Dave.

I think pipefitters in Perth are normally working on any thing from 1 inch upwards amd normally not screwed.
I cannot help you on licencing for plumbers (industrial or domestic) but I know a friend from Manchester who recently had to go back to college to get his WA plumbing licence but this does not allow him to work on gas. That is another licence.
Each state has it's own rules so I cannot help about SA.
