Feel a little bit happier now.
I'm hopefully going to book our meds for the easter week when my 5 year old is off school and hubbies on week hols.
Will keep you posted

Hi - We moved here 2 years ago ( landed on Paddy's Day!), myself, my wife and 3 kids , who are now 10 (girl) 8 (boy) and 2 (girl). I transferred with work so a lot of what other people have gone through to get visas etc we didn't have to struggle with and I was lucky to have a job to arrive to. I managed to do a few trips out to here before the move and had a house and car etc set up. We are on a 4 year visa and it was never a full move, we were here for 2 years at least with a decision to be made at that stage, decision has been made and wev'e just bought a house and will be going for PR soon so I suppose that means we like it :-). We settled in the Northern Beaches area of Sydney which is a fabulous area ( but expensive to buy/rent). The kids started school in kindegarten (kindy), which is the same as junior infants and year 3. ( School classes in primary start at kindy, year1, year2......year 6, high school starts at year 7). They settled in very quick and we found the teachers etc. to be very good. They put on a kids art show last year and all the teachers were serving finger food and wine while the parents looked around, this was at 7pm on a Friday evening, the teachers had baked all the food and were giving up their free time to do so! I was amazed, not what I was used to. Lots of activities around the school for parents to get involved with as well which is a great way to meet people. We found everyone very friendly but at the start it took a bit of time to get used to some very direct questioning, eventually worked out they are not been nosey they are just interested and a lot of the time if money is involved they are trying to see if they can help you get a better deal somewhere else!!

Some of the things that have come up so far, phone cards are the way to go, sausages can be found, I've even found black pudding! Nothing like a barbie breakfast on a Sunday morning, sausages, pudding, eggs etc. with a dollop of YR sauce. For Tayto, YR sauce, Chef etc go to www.tasteireland.com.au, think they deliver all over Oz, for a Tayto fix its worth the price. For shipping try Oman as well ( www.oman.ie) we didn't ship much and I can agree with everyone when they say ship as much as you can, it really does help you get started and even give you some familiarity. Rented houses are fairly boring so having your own stuff around would help, may even help with the homesickness.

Anyone with kids hitting communion or confirmation age may find it strange here. My oldest daughter made her communion a couple of weeks before we travelled so the family could be there ( our youngest daughter was christened on the same day), when we arrived and she started school we found out she would be making her confirmation! From what I can figure out confirmation is made is some parishes before communion. Bottom line, she didn't care as she made a fortune, communion and confirmation in the same year, shes worth more than I am at this stage!!!!! In general the kids love it here and would not go back to Ireland, they miss the family of course but the lifestyle, weather, facilities etc. are what they are used to now and I think they would find it very hard at this stage to go back. We found it harder to settle ( as we expected ) but wev'e made some good friends, especially through the school and have well settled at this stage.

Someone else mentioned converting dollars to euros, I would definatley advise not doing this also, get used to dollars asap as that is what you are paid in. But if you are back in Ireland, do convert from euros to dollars - you'll soon see how much we are being ripped off in Ireland, scary!!

Best of luck to all of you about to make the trip -

I know this sounds mad but I think it would be so "not right" to upload the kids to a strange place and at least if I brought all their toys they would have familiarity around them! Obviously bits of househould stuff and personal stuff coming along too.
i'll let you know how we get on cheers Yvonne
Hi, thats good, hopefully thats another thing you can cross off your list. I can understand what you are saying about the kids toys, I don't have children but I can imagine that you are feeling weird about uprooting there lives. But to be honest, I think that they will only be too happy with the move, it might take a little bit of settling time but this country is totally geared towards kids. Bring the toys that they really adore, bribe them if you have too, ok, lots of mammy's and daddy's are now thinking how wrong I am for saying that, especially since I'm not a mammy, but c'mon, I think they will be ok. I mean bribe them with the adventure of Koalas and Kangaroos. One thing I've learned about the whole move is that there is no point in stressing too much, as long as you have thought about the important stuff like, will you be able to afford a home, will you be able to get a job, can you survive without your family, then everything else will fall into place, as long as you come here with an upbeat positive attitude, cos if you want to find faults and reasons to go home there are plenty. But I love it here, and all the small detail that I miss about home is replaced by walking on a gorgeous beach, 5 minutes from my house, sitting out on my day off in a lovely restaurant with the sun shining down on you and just chilling, and just the lovely laid back feeling you get here. Yes, of course I miss my family, I saw 2 sisters having lunch together yesterday, and it made me miss having one of my sisters here. I know I have gone off the track a bit from your original question, but I think all I am trying to say is, think everything through, the pro's the con's and then deal with everything else as it comes. Everyones experience is going to be different, its up to you how good you make yours, but remember, you are coming here for a reason, and although it is quite different from home, you will be fine, having said that I would kill for a packet of taytos and a kimberely biscuit Deirdre

Hi, that was a nice positive post, even though I am here already and enjoying aussie life, its great to hear other happy stories. I would agree with you, and I have said it in previous posts, don't waste your time converting from dollar to euro, dollar is what you earn now, and they don't always compare. I was earning more euro than dollar, yet I save more dollar than what I did euro. I have found it harder to make friends but I think when you have children it is alot easier. And your right, taytos and black pudding can be found here if you look. WE were are the casino ( perth) last weekend, and we went into Paddy Hannons ( Irish pub) and they were giving out free samples of black and white pudding. The thing is, of course you will miss all things familiar, but that doesn't mean you want to move back home. Don't panic, and if it doesn't work, give it a couple of years, then at least you gave it a good shot. Good luck, Deirdre

Hi Yvonne

You are a step ahead of us regarding shipping. Have made no enquiries yet. Glad to hear you are pleased with Careline. Is that a shared container or your own. When do you hope to move. Have you started your packing. We hope to hear from Visa soon. Just about coming up to the four month mark. I am checking the e-mails constantly. We are not bringing an awful lot of stuff with us but still reckon probably need 20ft container. We also have a dog to ship. The kids wouldn't go anywhere without him. That's another job in store for us. Do you have contact details for Careline ?

Thanks

MK

We hope to move as soon as visa is granted.. house is sold but haven't signed anything contracts yet. We have packed loads for Car boot sale, and like that I am not bringing to much with me. I had my family out here on Saturday for my birthday and they basically went around our house and if it was coming with us they bought it!!! So I was delighted with that. The container is not shared (i didn't want that and he told me they don't do it).
You should speak to a guy called Kevin Carey in Careline... having seen some of the prices that some people have spoke about on this forum I think 4800 euro is really good.. check out their website - his contact details are below... I have a mobile number for him but my husband has brought it to work with him.. i'll forward this later to you.
Careline Moving & Storage Unit 1 Park West Drive.,
Park West Industrial Est.,Dublin 12.
Tel: 01 6233832
Fax: 01 6233892
[email protected]

good luck with the waiting... god I wish we were at your stage now.. how long ago did you have meds done?

Hi Yvonne

Thanks a mill for the Carline info. I will make contact with them. We had our meds beginning of March. LCU were finished processing meds around third week March. Just waiting now to see what happens. The waiting is a killer. Every morning my heart jumps in loops waiting to see any new mail. I cannot wait until this is all over.

Thanks again
