I would probably avoid Great Wall until their safety improves - they were struggling to get one star with EuroNCAP, and unable to sell within the EU for a while when they were allowed to sell in Australia. And I doubt they've lifted the safety of their cars sold in Australia to the minimum allowable in the EU.

I had the same misgivings about Hyundais before they became a household name. The Great Wall ute is as good as any unless you plan on crashing and dying in a firey wreck.

It wouldn't necessarily be you causing the crash if one happened, so you can't exactly plan on it.

Im just saying that I would buy one if I needed a ute as long as the standard working parts were all in order. They only carry 2 peole after all and would probably offer more protection than you'd get being piled into a tiny hatchback in a crash.

You're quite right - it looks like this was announced 2 months ago. The original SUVs rated really poorly on safety, with ANCAP ratings of 1 or 2 whilst not being able to meet requirements in the EU. Looks like they may have lifted their game a bit on the SUV, don't know about the utes though.

The ute appears quite basic on the safety front, 2 stars. They are having to add stability control for 2011 regs coming in. It seems the suv is a good buy but the utes are lagging....

The SUV only has 2 airbags - driver & front passenger. No side or curtain airbags, even as an option.
