Advice/ thoughts on a car with high mileage . . . please?
I know nothing about older cars, I have always tended to by new, but can't afford what I want!
I have found a 2003 Toyota Prado Grande, 195,000km, dual fuel for $34000.
The others of the same year/ spec (though no duel fuel) are all around $39000.
So is high mileage as issue? The other cars (around $39000) all have about 130,000km-150,000km.
Any advice would be fab!

That's a lot of miles for a lot of money IMHO. It all depends on where those miles have been done as well. If it has been bushbashed then I'd be more anxious. However, that said, we have a 31 year old Volvo with over 600k on the clock and the original engine, still chugging away so high miles doesnt necessarily mean scrap heap.

We just traded a good truck with 205 on the clock as the repair bills were crippling, just mental what they wanted for reconditioned let alone new parts on a basic ford!!

You can buy a brand new Great Wall for 23,000 brand new... Basically a Mitsubishi, uses the 300 running gear. Bargain. Much better value than a clapped out Prado as long as your not a snob of course....

Re: Advice/ thoughts on a car with high mileage . . . please?
Hi
Hi milage isnt always so bad as long as it has been well maintained. I have bought a 2004 diesel van with 165,000 miles on the clock 3 months ago and it runs like a dream.
I would be looking to see if the model you are after has had good feedback from other owners to see if it is a good car in the first place and what mechanical issues they can be prone to. I would then go and look at the car and see if it has any of these prone mechanical problems and they have been fixed already. Check to see if it has a really good service history(most important) and always make sure it has had a recent cam belt (timing belt) change as if that is due to be changed and it does break whilst driving then 8 times out of 10 your engine needs to be replaced. Check sills and arches for rust or dogdy repair and make sure the oil and water look clean and clear. check this out

A Toyotas always a safer bet even with high mileage and they always hold their price. Still seems expensive though but a fool and their money are soon parted.
