Might be a bit tough on that, but you'll get family tax benefit to help you. It's not something that you'll be able to live on long term though, especially if you buy a house - renting you'll be OK so long as you don't go overboard (I'd say less than $350 per week).

you realy need to be looking at about 80k +.

Re: $40k enough in Adelaide?
On $40k you'd pay $3,900 tax, so that's take home $36,100 ($695 per week). I haven't taken medicare out of that, but they should get some relief there as they are on a low wage, just can't remember how much that is at the minute.
They'll also get the full amount of FTB (which is $4460.30 per year per child under 13, or $5595.45 13 to 15) which will help for a while. So 5 kids under 13 say, would be $440 ish per fortnight. Also should be able to get help with the rent.
I'd do it for maybe 6 months, but no longer than that.

Yes, you can claim FTB, child care costs and rent assistance as a new migrant. It's the benefits like the Dole, or Sick pay that you can't claim for two years.

Re: $40k enough in Adelaide?
Hubby was on $42k when we first arrived and without overtime it was just impossible. To give you a bit of an idea - we put $500 per week away for rent and all bills etc. That doesnt take into account petrol and groceries so you could easy add $300 per week for that. Thats $800 gone straight away so you're already $100 behind. Centrelink payments will help a lot - not sure how much you'd get though - Wendy has quoted for 5 kids I think but you've only got 3?
I would prob look at hubby asking if overtime is available.

I get something that's the same as child benefit, the same as the uk one. in the uk i think i got about 72 pounds a month, here i get something i claimed back at the end of the yr, which i think was about $400.
