Default Carpenters needed

Talking to one of them guys today who goes around all the sites to gee up the builds and he said of all the trades he is dealing with on the house building front it's carpenters they can't get.

Apparently it's such a problem they are thinking of breaking down the qualification into separate parts so chippies can qualify quicker in certain things.

So instead of a 3/4 year course some could just do 1 year in a specific discipline and join the workforce quicker.

Food for thought.

Any chippies for Cairns ?

Any chippies for Cairns ?

Hi Bix,

We have heard this too, my hubby is a carpenter, and there is a lot of work on the GC, but he has been told that the Carpenters in Cairns and surrounding areas are getting paid 'funny money'. We have been looking into it, could you tell me some of your local papers that advertise the jobs

Thanks

Lisa

Hello Lisa.
The Cairns Post on a Saturday is the main one and one weekday but can't remember which day. I also find the Careerone Website is better than Seek.com for Cairns.

I didn't mention the dosh purposely as didn't want to get anyones hopes up thinking that new chippies to the country will have to go through the usual licencing pain / start at the bottom type thing ? Perhaps you can advise us on that ?

But, yes, funny money indeed.

The site inspector guy I was talking to said competent chippies with the right qualifications and experience are earning around $100k PA for a basic 7-8 hour day with the occassional Saturday morning thrown in. That's more than he is earning.

Good while it lasts eh ?
