We used Uhaul when we moved from Wyoming to Minnesota a couple of years ago. They were the cheapest and gauranteed that we would have the truck when we would need it.

Yes, we used Uhaul down here in Texas when we last moved.
I think the phrase which comes to mind is one that most of my American friends have never heard - 'cheap and cheerful'.
The A/C will work if you are lucky, you won't hear the radio above about 30mph (which is about 15mph short of top speed), BUT there's millions of them around, they have a pretty efficient nationwide booking system and, did I mention they were cheap?

Andy.

We've moved three times and always checked U-Haul, Penske and Ryder. Penske was always cheapest, by a good margin, so check Penske before renting from U-Haul.

A veteran of several self moves, I would offer this advise:

If you are using a trailer- U-Haul is your only option. These are cheap, and I have never had any problems.

However, if you are renting a truck, check out Penske- I have always found them cheaper, and the trucks are usually almost new- compared to U-Haul, whose rolling stock is typically much older, and thus more prone to breakdown. I also rented a Ryder 1 time, and had a very good experience. I believe Budget Truck Rental also offers trucks, but I believe they are owned by Ryder or U-haul.

'It's t'other way around - Budget bought Ryder's retail (rent to public) truck rental business.
