Renewing Driving Licence
My licence (Italian) is due to expire in the first few days of January and I had been planning on renewing it at a local driving school to do it and the medical.
How long is this likely to take and is it possible to drive if the licence hasn’t arrived by the expiry date?
Thanks!

When I did mine when I lived in Italy I went to the local ACI office who sorted everything including the issue of a temporary permit as I was swapping UK for Italian
They also organised the medical which was done by an Italian Air Force doctor resplendent in his uniform

Thanks for all the replies - I have started the process at a local driving school and have the medical appointment in a couple of weeks.
As I’m under 50, is this just a basic eye test?

Yes, exactly! And even for me, over 70, that's all it was. And the "medico" just pointed at one letter on the bottom line. When I wasn't sure about this he indicated a letter on the next line up. I could see this OK so he passed me! The first time I renewed a licence in Italy the medico also tested me for colour blindness with the classic pages of spots. When I couldn't make out the number/letter, he pointed at some obvious colours on a poster. I had no difficulty with these, so again I passed.
The main point is that you pay!
I'm speaking about Milan - maybe in smaller towns they're more conscientious.

Nope, I had my eyes tested and the general fitness for my driving licence. The medical consisted of asking me if I had a heart condition, diabetes, etc... He didn't check if I had a pulse... My left eye has always been rubbish, he told me he would have to remove some of the vehicles I can drive.. ie 7 ton trucks. I stood up and said I would use a different eye specialist and I wouldn't be paying him... He shrugged and ticked all the boxes... I still have my full licence entitlement.
