Exclamation Newbie - Q on availability and cost of medicines in developing countries

Hi all!

I am considering taking a 2 year post in some developing country (the country has not been confirmed but most likely it will be an African country). I have been diagnosed with osteoporosis at quite a young age (i'm 24) and am now taking 3 types of medication which i currently have on repeat prescription, lasting 2 months at a time.

My questions are:
- would such medicines as Calcium supplements (v.high dosage) and Alendronic acid be prescribed without a prescription?
- how easy is it to get such medicines from local suppliers in Africa? of course this will be very dependent on country..
- also how much they may cost in Africa?

any information related to the above would be highly appreciated!

Many Thanks!

Welcome to BE.

I suggest you resist your questions in the forum covering the country you will be moving to. Here is the link to the Africa forums.

Africa is a continent of some 55 countries. Your answer will vary depending on which country you are considering - for example, there is a huge difference between Egypt, Chad, DRC and South Africa. If you can narrow it down it would be easier to assist - although 90% of the posters are SA focused (only 10% are actually SA based) so unlikely anyone here will have the requisite knowledge you seek.

Good luck

I recall being asked (more than once) where exactly is South Africa? My usual reply is to suggest you hit the continent of Africa, keep heading south until you are running out of land and the odds are you have arrived...

If its snowing, and you have just covered 2,000km of icy water, you've gone too far.
