Would you believe that we've been here a year?!Posted on Tuesday 15 January 2008 at 07:44 - Post Comment
T and I were just driving in the car, out to visit the triathlon course that I'll be swim/cycle/running on Sunday, when we realised that we have been here in NZ 1 year to the day. How time flies when you're mostly having fun?!
It has certainly been a period of ups and downs, but loking back we seem to have certainly been kept busy. We've managed to buy land and a house, whilst renting out a place back in the UK. We have both got jobs - T more than 1 - and done well at them. We have swum in hot pools and warm surf, cycled to all sorts of places, boogie boarded, snorkelled, walked the hills, drunk and eaten at a wide variety of establishments, have had friends and family to stay, been punting, been on the gondola, been on boats, been to Queenstown, Hanmer & Kaikoura, been fishing, caught fish, caught crayfish, found paua, had parties, been to parties, made friends, lost friends, made more friends, had BBQ's, eaten Kiwi grub, and generally had a ball.
One year. Blimey! It has really crept up on us, what with all that's been going on, so we've not really arranged to celebrate it. There's a bottle of bubbly tucked away for a special occasion so maybe we'll crack that open sometime soon.
T has been a busy bee over the past 2 days, getting a new - non teaching - CV up and running now that we're knocking teaching on the head for the time being. She's also been bashing the phones to local businesses to track down a job - something half decent. I'm sure that something good will crop up over the next few weeks, especially if effort = reward! T has also got applications in with ASB (a city centre bank), and is soon to be going on an assessment day to be an Air Traffic Controller so it's situation normal with the number of fingers being crossed here with us.
My work is still on a nice even keel. Murmurings of management are getting slightly louder now and it's up to me to make the decision on this an easy one for my management to make. It's good as I feel a little stretched and this can only be a good thing for my own development.
Great news on T's part - seeing as I have been putting a fair bit of time and effort into losing the Christmas blubber and getting fit for this mini-triathlon on Sunday, T and her mate Kathy are going to also give one a go. It's in late Feb, and is a 300m swim, a 10km cycle, and 3 km run. You go girl! She has started training already, and I am mightily impressed with the effort and results.
We went to the beach on Sunday just gone with friends Kathy and Brent, and despite a cool wind on what was a fantastically sunny day, had a brilliant time. T had scored a complete bargain at The Warehouse (where everyone gets a bargain!) with 2 boogie boards and a set of flippers (for me) for just a few $$$'s. So with T in my wetsuit to keep her warm, we spent a good hour in the surf, riding in the super waves that were coming in. Great fun
I'm off the sauce, as is usual for me each year between New Years and my Birthday early Feb, and it's going pretty good. Certainly helps with losing a few kg's I can tell you. Saves T having to put up with my snoring too. Looking forward to my birthday though - it's the weather for a few cold ones after a hard day at the moment, nice and warm with long drawn out evenings. Lovely.
T's sister and her family were due to emigrate to NZ from Essex this month, but their house sale has fallen through yet again and so it'll be a while until we see them - prob another month or so. Disappointing for us both really, but at least they are still coming. We also have heard of some old friends from Team Ixion - a bike racing team I am a member of - who are over to spend 3 years here in the South Island in Dunedin, and so are pretty excited about that too.
Ah well, that's it for now I reckon. Here's to another year in the land of the long white cloud - Aotearoa - New Zealand. Love it.
